The UGR has been awarded with the "Human Resources Excellence in Research (HRS4R)", which reflects the institution’s commitment to continuously improve its human resource policies in line with the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. The UGR is also internationally renowned for its excellence in diverse research fields and ranked among the top Spanish universities in a variety of ranking criteria, such as national R&D projects, fellowships awarded, publications, and international funding.
The UGR is one of the few Spanish Universities listed in the Shanghai Top 500 ranking - Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). The 2025 edition of the ARWU places the UGR in 301-400th position in the world and as the 3-8 highest ranked University in Spain, reaffirming its position as an institution at the forefront of national and international research. Project description:
The project, offered in collaboration with the PROFITH group at the University of Granada, is based on the research line of “promoting physical activity in children and adolescents”. The project has a highly international dimension and a relevant social transference, since it is based on the framework of the “Global Matrix” initiative (https://www.activehealthykids.org/global-matrix/) developed by the Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance in the last decade.
The “Global Matrix” offers an extensive number of reports along the last decade regarding different physical activity indicators in children and adolescents, including the largest participation of countries across worlwide. In the last edition the Global Matrix 4.0 included 57 participating countries/jurisdictions and in the ongoing Global Matrix 5.0 there are a total of 70 participating countries/jurisdictions. Currently, the Allicance is working in the Global Matrix 5.0, where six researchers from the PROFITH group are participating as part of the scientific committee, transference committee, and research committee from the Spanish team, which guarantee the closeness to the project. In addition, the 2 main leaders of the Spanish team, are regular collaborators with the PROFITH group and will be part of the current project.
This project is nowadays specially relevant because, in spite of the high quantity and quality scientific evidence regarding the physical activity levels in children and adolescents, the European rates of low physical activity levels remains, which determine unhealthy lifestyles among children and adolescents and negative consequences for future health. In addition, the physical activity must achieve another global committmeent with the social and environmental challengues that were already presented in the Global Action Plan on Physical Activty 2018-2030 supporting the Sustainable Development Goals of the Agenda 2030. However, changing behaviours from passive to active (e.g. walking to school instead of using car) is a complex process and it is influenced by a large range of factors that affect our daily behaviour. Actually, the ecological model indicate that invividual, interpersonal, environmental and policy factors determine the behaviour of being physically active. Consequently, studies compiling and working in these factors are required to provide a better comprehension.
The current project aims to use the information published in all the reports from the European countries by “Global Matrix” along the last decade and provide new insights, efforts and tools, to contribute to increase the physical activity levels among european youth. A potential European Report Card may be developed, regarding that the european countries show a high diversity regarding the existing socio-economic and gender inequalities. In addition, a deeper analysis of the physical acitvity domains (i.e., school, commuting, out-of-school) where young people are more likely to increase the daily physical activity behaviour and an examination of how the family (e.g. sociodemographic characteristics, perceptions), environmental (e.g. air-quality, home and school neighbourhoud) or policy (e.g. physical acivity planns) affect the physical activity levels are required, to provide a more comprehensive view and provide potential solutions. This will allow to propose interventions at European scale to investigate the ways to switch from passive to active behaviours in european children and adolescents.
Enthusiastic and committed with the current society researchers are welcome to participate in the project. Furthermore, we are open to receive other proposals whithin the current proposed framework.
