Professor Irene Cantarero Villanueva, from the Department of Physiotherapy at the University of Granada, welcomes postdoctoral candidates interested in applying for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) in 2026 at this University. Brief description of the institution:
The University of Granada (UGR), founded in 1531, is one of the largest and most important universities in Spain. With more than 57,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and almost 7,000 members of staff, the UGR offers 97 undergraduate degrees, 157 master’s degrees (7 of which are double degrees) and 28 doctoral programmes via its 124 departments and nearly 50 centers. Accordingly, the UGR offers one of the most extensive and diverse ranges of higher education programmes in Spain.
The UGR has been awarded with the "Human Resources Excellence in Research (HRS4R)", which reflects the institution’s commitment to continuously improve its human resource policies in line with the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. The UGR is also internationally renowned for its excellence in diverse research fields and ranked among the top Spanish universities in a variety of ranking criteria, such as national R&D projects, fellowships awarded, publications, and international funding.
The UGR is one of the few Spanish Universities listed in the Shanghai Top 500 ranking - Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). The 2025 edition of the ARWU places the UGR in 301-400th position in the world and as the 3-8 highest ranked University in Spain, reaffirming its position as an institution at the forefront of national and international research. Internationally, the University of Granada is firmly committed to its participation in the calls of the Framework Programme of the European Union. For the duration of the prevoius Framework Programme, Horizon 2020, the UGR obtained a total of 124 projects with a total funding of more than €30 million. For the current Framework Programme, Horizon Europe, the UGR has obtained 136 projects, so far, with a total funding of more than €38 million.
Brief description of the Centre/Research Group:
CUIDATE-LAB (Comprehensive Understanding in Oncology: Diagnosis and Advanced Therapeutic Exercise for Related Side Effects) is an advanced research unit at the University of Granada focused on the assessment, prevention, and treatment of cancer-related side effects through personalized physiotherapy and therapeutic exercise. Established in 2008, the group conducts translational, clinically oriented research integrating functional evaluation, e-Health, and innovative intervention strategies within a multidisciplinary environment. Located in the Health Technology Park, CUIDATE-LAB collaborates closely with leading clinical and research institutions, facilitating strong integration between research, education, and healthcare practice. The laboratory combines advanced biomedical technology with expertise in musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, and neurological assessment to design and validate individualized exercise-based interventions for oncology patients. The group has led the development of digital platforms that enable personalized exercise prescription, real-time monitoring, and remote clinical decision-making. CUIDATE-LAB is recognized for its high-impact scientific output, leadership in competitive projects, and strong capacity for clinical and institutional transfer, contributing to regional and national healthcare strategies in oncology rehabilitation.
Project description:
The applicant will be integrated into a research line focused on advancing personalized therapeutic exercise in oncology through digital health and precision rehabilitation models. Building on the validated ATOPE framework and the ongoing development of ATOPE-PRO, the main objective of this project is to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into clinical decision-making processes for exercise prescription in cancer patients. Specifically, the project aims to develop and implement AI-driven algorithms capable of optimizing and dynamically adapting exercise interventions based on patient-reported outcomes, clinical variables, and physiological data. These models will support real-time decision-making, enhancing personalization, safety, and efficiency across both supervised and remote care settings. A key objective is to move towards a data-driven, adaptive system that can learn from patient responses and continuously refine intervention strategies.
As secondary objectives, the project will explore the transferability of this AI-based approach to more complex clinical scenarios, such as metastatic disease or different cancer localizations, where variability in functional status and treatment-related toxicities requires more sophisticated personalization. Additionally, the integration of wearable technologies and digital biomarkers will be considered to improve monitoring, enabling continuous and objective assessment of patient status, adherence, and response to therapeutic exercise.
