OCC Shift Supervisor - Operations Control Center
Job Description
The Operations Control Center (OCC) Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily operations of a 24/7 control center, ensuring the efficient monitoring of campus utility and building systems, including HVAC chillers, and energy management systems. This role involves real-time system oversight, incident response, and direct supervision of union mechanics to maintain optimal system performance and customer satisfaction. The Supervisor also handles after-hours emergency response, including issues in residential halls, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
The Supervisor utilizes Building Automation Systems (BAS) and other monitoring platforms to assess system conditions, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate responses to alarms, equipment malfunctions, and customer calls. Additionally, this position ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards, enforces operational procedures, and collaborates with internal departments and external agencies to optimize system performance.
Strong leadership, decision-making, and technical expertise are critical to success in this role. The Supervisor works a rotating shift and provides coverage for other supervisors as needed to ensure 24/7 operational continuity.
Job Responsibilities
- Operations & Monitoring: Oversee daily operations of the Operations Control Center (OCC), ensuring the efficient and reliable monitoring of utility and building systems, including HVAC, chillers, and energy management systems. Utilize Building Automation Systems (BAS) to maintain optimal system performance
- Team Leadership: Supervise and support OCC staff, including scheduling, training, and performance management. Foster a culture of accountability, efficiency, and teamwork.
- HVAC and Controls Management: Utilize expertise in chiller operations, temperature controls, and energy management systems to maintain and troubleshoot building systems.
- Compliance Management: Ensure all activities align with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards related to HVAC, chiller, and control systems.
- Incident Response: Lead response efforts for system alarms, equipment malfunctions, emergencies, and after-hours residential hall issues, ensuring minimal disruption and effective problem resolution.
- After-Hours Support: Serve as the primary point of contact for after-hours emergency calls and operational issues within residential halls and other campus buildings.
- Structured Operations Expertise: Apply experience from regimented, process-driven environments to maintain consistency in control center operations, following standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure efficiency and reliability.
- Collaboration: Work closely with internal departments, vendors, and regulatory entities to optimize system performance and resolve technical challenges.
- Safety Assurance: Enforce safety protocols within the control center and oversee emergency preparedness measures for HVAC and control system failures.
- Reporting and Documentation: Maintain accurate records of operations, system performance, incidents, and key metrics. Provide regular reports to management.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience: Associate of Science or Technical Certification and 5 to 7 years of experience in HVAC systems, utility plant operations, and maintenance within a Building Automation System (BAS) in a control room environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Supervisory Experience: Demonstrated ability to lead and manage multi-skilled technical teams, ensuring accountability, efficiency, and adherence to operational procedures.
- Technical Skills: Strong understanding of HVAC systems, energy management, utility plant operations, and control room operations. Proficiency in BAS monitoring and troubleshooting is essential.
- Customer Service & Communication: Experience in a customer service call center is a plus. Must have strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to provide excellent internal and external customer service to faculty, staff, students, parents, and colleagues. Must also hold subordinates accountable for the same level of professionalism and service.
- Adaptability & Flexibility: Works a 24/7 rotating shift, with potential assignments to a day shift. Must be available to fill in for other supervisors as needed and be flexible with work hours based on departmental needs.
- Emergency Response: Experience in managing emergency situations and coordinating effective resolutions during after-hours incidents is highly valued.
