The University of Virginia School of Data Science is a leader in preparing students, advancing research, and developing the intellectual foundations that underpin the age of artificial intelligence. As data science and AI transform every field of inquiry, the School brings together researchers, educators, and practitioners to address complex problems and generate knowledge with societal impact.
We seek exceptional candidates for an open-rank tenured or tenure-track faculty position in the School of Data Science (SDS) within the Data and Society domain, broadly understood to include integrative work across the social sciences, policy, humanities, law, business, and more technical areas of data science. We are especially interested in candidates who work on foundational questions at the intersections of data, society, and AI while addressing complex, real-world challenges.
A successful candidate will join a collaborative faculty community committed to research excellence, innovative teaching, interdisciplinary partnership, and the responsible advancement of data science and AI. Our Data and Society faculty work across SDS domains to identify how data-centric systems and AI are embedded into social organization and to evaluate and respond to their potential impacts and consequences for individuals, communities, and institutions. SDS faculty from various disciplinary backgrounds work closely together to shape a rapidly evolving field while leveraging the strengths of one of the nation's leading public research universities, with exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and scholarly impact. A successful candidate will also benefit from multiple data- and AI-focused centers, initiatives, and efforts across the University, including facilities in Northern Virginia.
Qualifications
When applying, candidates should detail their research expertise and interests, and their instructional experience, as well as potential contributions to Data and Society-centered aspects of SDS's inter- and multi-disciplinary mission.
Candidates must have earned, or be on track to earn, a terminal degree (including PhD or JD) in a relevant field for Data and Society, including (but not limited to) STEM, social science, legal, policy, and humanities disciplines with a data science focus, by August 2027 or appointment start date. Candidates with backgrounds and experiences that are historically underrepresented in data science are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates for senior ranks (tenured associate or full professor) must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research, teaching, and advising, on in data science and/or closely related fields, and must have established a national and international reputation for contribution to the field in foundations, methodology, application, and/or impact. Candidates for junior rank (tenure-track assistant professor) must demonstrate the potential for excellence in understanding and responding to societal impacts from data science and AI, as well as education, instruction, and mentorship.

- A research statement that describes your past research endeavors and contributions, as well as your future research goals (max. 3 pages).

This statement should also include planned future educational activities, and how you see data science education evolving over the next decade (max. 3 pages).

- If available, reviews & course evaluations from up to 3 educational courses, seminars, and/or short courses.
Review of applicants will begin on or around November 1, and the position will remain open until filled. Rank will be commensurate with academic and/or industry experience. Appointments are available on 9-month contracts.
