Job Description:

The Syracuse University Institute for Sustainability Engagement seeks an Outreach Coordinator to assist with developing and implementing sponsored programs (i.e., grants) funded by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Science Foundation and others. Grant focuses include sustainable materials management, sustainable organics management, natural resources management, environmental sustainability, climate change, and water resiliency, and environmental finance.

Tasks will include, but are not limited to, developing and implementing outreach plans, providing technical assistance, developing tools and resources, overseeing student interns, creating digital communications, and coordinating events and meetings. This is a part time, year-round position with a competitive hourly wage and benefits package. This position will be based in Syracuse or a remote/hybrid location in New York State. Periodic travel throughout NY and/or Region 2 will be required. The Outreach Coordinator will report to the Institutes Assistant Director of Communications and Programs, and depending on the program, they will also report to Program Associates and Managers.

This position is part of a bargaining unit and is represented by the union SEIU, Local 200United.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree and minimum of 3 years of experience working in the field(s) of waste reduction, sustainable materials management, natural resources management, environmental education, outreach and program coordination.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Required skills include program coordination; meeting planning and facilitation; written communication; outreach and engagement; interpersonal communication; time/task management.
  • A competitive applicant has knowledge of sustainability audiences (e.g., water, waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and organics management) and environmental communication best practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the creation, branding, and distribution of print and digital media including the development and execution of comprehensive, ISE and grant deliverable content and digital strategy. Including digital media campaigns, social media, web, email, video, and website development (design, copy and maintenance).
  • Strengthen engagement, maintain brand integrity, improve user experience, and support key programmatic and sustainability priorities.
  • Ensure all communications, campaigns, and media maintain consistent brand identity and effectively communicate the organizations mission, vision, and sustainability priorities.
  • Foster the development of professional skills, expertise and knowledge, and career goals of the Institutes project assistants and student interns through mentorship and by cultivating an inclusive and supportive work environment.
  • Supervise graphic designers, student interns, and external creatives. Providing guidance, assigning tasks, managing workflows, and ensuring timely, high-quality deliverables.
  • Assist ISEs Program Associates, Managers, and Assistant Directors with assessing and continually improving programs and services. Align approaches to all Institute-related work with SUs Office of People and Culture.
  • Coordinate and organize in person, virtual, and hybrid events. Partner with other organizations for collaborative initiatives and conferences.
  • Help to develop and implement feedback mechanisms for performance analytics, project partners, stakeholders, and audiences served by ISEs projects and programs.
  • Utilize evaluation methods and metrics to assess successes, impacts, and opportunities for improvement for ISEs outreach, projects and programs.
  • Develop project and activity reports for work conducted, grant deliverables completed, and qualitative and quantitative impacts.
  • Other duties and tasks as determined and assigned.
