Painter
Job Summary
Painting is a key specialty within the Facilities Maintenance Department. Under general supervision, these employees apply paint, varnish, stain, enamel, and lacquer to protect and enhance interior and exterior building surfaces. They may occasionally work in environments that are dusty, wet, noisy, or otherwise hazardous. This position is designated as essential, and employees may be required to work during university closures related to emergencies or natural disasters. Painters work under the direct supervision of the Building Trades Supervisor within the Facilities Maintenance Department.

Essential Job Functions
- Prepare surfaces for finishing by cleaning, scraping, sanding, patching, caulking, and masking adjacent areas as required.
- Apply protective and decorative coatings including paint, primers, stains, sealants, and textures to a variety of interior and exterior surfaces.
- Performs minor surface repairs, including installing or repairing drywall and competing tape, float, and texture work.
- Operate painting and construction related tools and equipment, such as sprayers, saws, drills, grinders, and other power or hand tools.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support departmental operations.
Minimum and Desired Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Candidates must possess at least three (3) years of verifiable experience in professional painting.
- Driver’s license
Desired Qualifications:
- Completion of a formal apprenticeship program or certification within the field of facilities painting or related field is preferred.
Supplemental Information
Key Competencies:
- Demonstrated knowledge of protective coating principles and commercial/construction painting methods.
- Solid working knowledge of Microsoft office, email platforms, and familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems.
- Ability to lead by example while upholding the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
- Commitment to providing exceptional service and working collaboratively to support departmental and university needs.
Physical Requirements:
Tasks involve regular—and occasionally sustained—performance of moderately physically demanding work. Duties may include climbing and balancing (such as ascending and descending ladders), stooping, kneeling, crawling, working at heights, and operating in confined spaces. The role may require lifting moderately heavy objects up to 45 pounds. A full range of physical motion is necessary to safely operate manual and electrically powered tools.

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, including dirt, dust, pollen, odors, moisture, extreme temperatures, humidity, fumes, noise, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, and toxic agents.
