Part Time Mechanical Engineer Summer Intern - NREC
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented applicant for a part-time Mechanical Engineer intern for the summer of 2026 to work with our teams at the National Robotics Engineering Center. This internship offers hands-on experience working alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams on real-world technical challenges. Successful applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field of study.
Your primary responsibilities include:
- Supporting laboratory, shop, or field activities
- Assisting with engineering design tasks and problem-solving activities related to robotic or automated system development for diverse industries and applications
- Performing engineering tests and creating testing documentation
- Creating and/or checking engineering documentation
- Communicating and collaborating with engineers and technical staff to troubleshoot mechanical issues and support design improvements
- Contributing to project meetings and providing updates on assigned tasks
- Following engineering, safety, and quality standards throughout project work
Required Qualifications:
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate program pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills
- Self-motivated, curious, and resilient, with a growth mindset and commitment to continuous improvement
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Must be highly organized with the ability to work on multiple projects/tasks simultaneously and remain agile given changing priorities
- Practices attention to detail, and respect for documentation accuracy and information sharing
Internship Work Period: Must be available to work part-time (approximately 24 hours per week) on site.
