Founded by a faculty member in UMKC’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS), Clio is a non-profit based in Kansas City that offers a website and mobile application that connects the public to nearby history and culture. Clio is seeking two part-time Research Assistants who will work directly with our founder to research, author, edit, and expand our library of short articles on historical and cultural landmarks. These individuals will also assist museums, libraries, and history/cultural organizations across the country that use Clio to share the history of landmarks in their communities.
The SHSS is home to ten departments and more than 25 academic degree programs spanning the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Through innovative teaching, research, and community engagement, SHSS prepares students to develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Job Description
The Part-Time Clio Research Assistant supports the development and enhancement of Clio's digital content while also assisting organizations that are using Clio in communities across the United States. Working directly with Clio's founder, individuals in this position will research, write, and edit short articles on historical and cultural topics while assisting partner organizations that use Clio in sharing stories about their communities.
While researching, writing, and editing articles about historical and cultural landmarks across the US forms the core of this position, this role also offers opportunities to contribute to Clio’s larger mission, including creating user support materials, grant writing, and outreach efforts. Employees in this position will have opportunities to develop professional skills, build networks in public history, education, and nonprofit work, and create a public-facing portfolio of their work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Author, edit, review, and improve Clio entries, including the production of new articles while also editing and improving existing articles for historical and cultural landmarks throughout the United States.
