The PhD in Media Studies degree at Victoria University of Wellington plays an increasingly vital and influential role in our rapidly changing world. Almost every sphere of human activity—social, cultural, political, and economic—is being reshaped by new forms of media.

Take an in-depth look at what media is today and how it impacts our lives. You'll complete research in an area of media that interests you, under the direct supervision of our expert academic staff.
Develop the research skills needed to plan and execute original projects and gain a deeper understanding of the media studies field.

Programme Structure

Courses include

Media and identity—gender, sexuality, ethnicity, nationality, age, disability, and class.
Digital media and technology—citizenship and democracy, identity and community, surveillance and privacy, economics.
Media, politics and news—what influences the media, news production and representation of events, civic engagement, media policy and regulation.
Popular culture and music—identity, production and consumption, negotiation and resistance, role of technologies and new media.
Television—contexts and industries, institutions and policies, genres and forms, audiences and representations.

Other requirements

General requirements

Research degree such as Honours or Master's by thesis from a New Zealand university with an average grade of B+ or higher, an approved international equivalent, or other approved evidence of adequate training and ability.
You may also be required to demonstrate your proficiency in English.
