Overview
Translation and Interpreting is becoming an increasingly important area of expertise as global communication expands, and there is a need for highly skilled experts in many areas including the further development of translation software, automated translation, software and videogame localization, intercultural product development, communication consultancy, policy making, intercultural studies, comparative cultural studies/history, public service interpreting, among others.
Completing a PhD in Translation Studies (Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling) from University of Essex will put you in a position to contribute substantially to the development of the field. For example, your PhD project might assess some aspect of Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling and come up with recommendations that might lead to an improvement of teaching strategy, of working strategy, or of the underpinning technology.
Your future
Given the breadth of the provision within the Department of Language and Linguistics, career prospects for the graduates vary depending on the study undertaken. Often the career destination of the PhD students is university lecturing or research. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the areas of linguistics they cover, this could be in departments of English, linguistics, education, sociology or cognitive science.

General requirements
- You will need a good Masters degree, or equivalent, in translation and interpreting or a related subject such as Linguistics or Literature. A well-developed research proposal is also essential.
- You will normally be required to attend an interview/Skype interview for acceptance, and acceptance is subject to research expertise in the department.
- If English is not your first language they will require IELTS 7.0 overall and 6.5 in all other components.
