About the Project

We are seeking a motivated and talented PhD student to investigate the topic of Energy Towers (also known as downdraft towers) as an innovative renewable energy technology. The project will focus on developing a comprehensive mathematical model of the flow system, capturing the interaction between airflow dynamics, ambient temperature variations, and other environmental variables.

The successful candidate will be responsible for formulating the governing equations of the flow, analyzing the thermodynamic and fluid mechanical processes, and implementing computational models to simulate system performance under realistic atmospheric conditions. The aim is to provide deeper physical understanding of the energy extraction process and identify conditions for optimal operation.

This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate interested in applying advanced fluid mechanics, applied mathematics, and computational modelling to renewable energy research, contributing to the scientific foundations of next-generation sustainable power systems.

Candidate Requirements

  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related discipline.
  • A strong academic record with a minimum average grade of 80 or equivalent.
  • Solid background in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.
  • Strong mathematical ability to derive and analyze governing equations.
  • Experience in computational modelling/programming (e.g., MATLAB, Python, or similar).
  • Good communication skills in English (written and spoken).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a research team.
