The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) is seeking a predoctoral candidate to work under the COVALLU project.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play a key role in atmospheric chemistry and ecosystem functioning. While their emissions, transport and atmospheric transformations have been extensively studied, their interactions with precipitation and potential impacts on terrestrial ecosystems remain poorly understood. This project will investigate the occurrence and composition of VOCs in rainwater and their implications for ecosystem processes in Mediterranean environments. The research will combine field observations, advanced chemical analysis, laboratory experiments and data integration approaches to improve our understanding of VOC cycling between the atmosphere and ecosystems. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative methodologies and to shape specific research questions within the broader project framework.
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate. The candidate will work with state-of-the-art instrumentation, including a Proton Transfer Reaction Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS), and will participate in:
- Field campaigns and environmental monitoring activities.
- Development and optimisation of analytical methods for VOC characterization.
- Chemical analysis of air and rainwater samples using advanced instrumentation.
- Data processing, statistical analysis and interpretation of large environmental datasets.
- Dissemination of results through scientific publications, conferences and stakeholder activities.
The PhD candidate will be embedded in a highly international and interdisciplinary environment, collaborating with experts in atmospheric chemistry, ecology, air quality, exposure science and environmental modelling. The position offers excellent training opportunities, access to national and international research networks, and participation in collaborative projects across Europe.
The selected candidate will be supervised by Dr. Ana Maria Yáñez-Serrano and Dr. Teresa Moreno, within the Environmental Geochemistry and Atmospheric Research (EGAR) group at IDAEA-CSIC (Barcelona, Spain), one of Europe’s leading research groups in atmospheric chemistry, air quality and environmental health.

Skills/Qualifications
A master's degree in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Atmospheric Sciences, Ecology, Physics, Earth Sciences, Environmental Engineering or a related discipline.
Specific Requirements
Experience with laboratory work, environmental monitoring and/or data analysis will be considered an advantage.
Programming and data-analysis skills (e.g., Wavemtrics, R, Python or similar) are desirable.
Good written and oral communication skills in English.
