Offer Description
The CHARME project aims to develop a rational approach to designing catalytic biochars from biomass and organic waste. The inorganic composition of biomass and sludge strongly depends on their origin. Naturally occurring elements such as Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, K, and Mn may promote the formation of active catalytic sites during pyrolysis. Conversely, elements such as Ca, Al, Si, and P may reduce catalytic activity through active-site blocking, formation of inactive phases, or changes in material properties. The main objective of the PhD is to quantify these effects and establish relationships between feedstock chemistry and biochar catalytic performance. The PhD candidate will work on:
- selection and characterization of biomass and other feedstocks;
- biochar production by pyrolysis and parametric study of preparation conditions;
- controlled modification of biochars through incorporation of metallic phases;
- physicochemical characterization of the materials;
- catalytic testing for methane reforming;
- post-reaction material characterization;
- identification of catalytic, synergistic, and inhibitory mechanisms associated with inorganic elements;
- correlation of composition, structure, and catalytic performance;
- development of an experimental database for machine-learning models.
The PhD will be conducted at ICPEES within the ECED group, which specializes in heterogeneous catalysis, renewable resource conversion, and CO₂ capture and conversion.
- Feedstocks and biochar production
Selection and characterization of feedstocks, followed by biochar production under different pyrolysis conditions. Chemical, textural, and structural properties will be analysed as a function of feedstock type and operating conditions.
- Mineral composition control and characterization
Biochars will be modified, when relevant, by controlled incorporation of metallic elements. The resulting phases will be characterized before and after reaction to identify species responsible for catalytic promotion or inhibition.
- Catalysis and structure–activity relationships
Materials will be evaluated in methane reforming and related reactions. Activity, selectivity, and stability will be correlated with composition and physicochemical properties.
- Machine-learning model development
Experimental results will feed a database used within the CHARME project to develop machine-learning models predicting catalytic performance from feedstock properties and pyrolysis conditions.

This PhD project aims to understand and predict how the mineral composition of biomass and sludge affects the catalytic properties of biochars produced by pyrolysis. Natural variations in metal content can lead to the in situ formation of catalytically active phases and strongly affect material performance. The project will establish relationships between feedstock composition, pyrolysis conditions, biochar physicochemical properties, and catalytic performance in methane reforming. Particular attention will be given to promoting and inhibiting elements and to the mechanisms underlying their effects. Experimental data will also support the development of machine-learning models to predict biochar catalytic performance from feedstock composition and preparation conditions.
