The “A. Vivaldi” Conservatory of Alessandria (lead institution), the “G. Verdi” Conservatory of Como, the “C. Monteverdi” Conservatory of Cremona, the “G. Puccini” Conservatory of Gallarate, the “F. The joint PhD program in “Prassi e Repertori della Musica Italiana” (Practices and Repertoires of Italian Music) is an advanced training course that supports an advanced artistic research project focused on the in-depth study and evolution of practices and repertoires in Italian music, also with particular regard to practices, theories, and repertoires that are expressions of the territories of the involved institutions. The research activity is guided by a process of knowledge production that finds its foundational value in artistic practices, with attention given to performative and compositional practices, adopting a conscious, creative, and critical approach to the methodologies used and the actions undertaken. It aims to offer a substantial contribution to knowledge, making available insights, skills, techniques, and materials for future uses and studies, with the general objective of contributing to the development of the arts and their interaction with other disciplines. The course and the training provided aim to offer methodologies useful for the design and implementation of the research project, with a clear general structure — based on the recognition of a solid research question and the identification of coherent and effective methods to address it — aimed at developing a relevant, communicable, and sustainable argument in a peer-reviewed context. The PhD program aims to increase awareness leading to critical analyses and evaluations and the synthesis of new and complex ideas, as well as to develop the skills necessary for communication and promotion in academic and professional contexts of the results acquired in advancing knowledge. Interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary approaches are promoted, providing connections and access to infrastructures and opportunities in the network of associated institutions, as well as with territorial, national, and international entities relevant to the themes and objectives of the research project in teaching, conservation, research, and artistic production.
The program is divided into two curricula. The first curriculum, titled “Prassi dei Repertori Storicamente Informati” (Historically Informed Repertoire Practices), is an advanced program – focused on the repertoires commonly addressed by historically informed performance practice – that supports a project of advanced artistic research focused on the in-depth study of practices, theories, and repertoires of Italian music from the Middle Ages to the modern era, including traditional music and musical traditions of the involved territories. The second curriculum, titled “Prassi e Repertori della Musica Moderna e Contemporanea” (Practices and Repertoires of Modern and Contemporary Music), supports an advanced artistic research project focused on the in-depth study and evolution of practices and repertoires in modern and contemporary Italian music, including practices, theories, and repertoires related to scholarly and popular traditions, jazz, pop/rock music, and electronics, as well as those related to improvisation, technology, multimedia, and performative actions of choreographic and theatrical nature. The program is based on multidisciplinarity, interdisciplinarity, and transdisciplinarity, guaranteed by the variety of involved departments as well as the multiplicity of scientific and artistic experiences and the plurality of disciplinary sectors of the members of the PhD course faculty. The territorial proximity of the affiliated institutions, all located in northern Italy, is relevant as it facilitates effective access to the network of operational and scientific structures available to doctoral students.
