PhD Scholarship in Human–Computer Interaction (HCI)
About the Project
I’m recruiting a fully funded PhD student to join the Urban Interfaces Lab at the University of Sydney, working on my Australian Research Council (ARC) DECRA project developing a rapid design toolkit for context-aware external human-machine interfaces (eHMIs) — the communication systems autonomous vehicles use to signal intent to pedestrians in complex urban environments.
The PhD project will investigate context-aware AV–pedestrian interactions using technologies such as haptic feedback, spatial audio, and mixed reality. Ultimately producing new knowledge for safe and inclusive eHMIs for future autonomous vehicles.
We are looking for candidates with:
- Excellent Honours or Master’s in HCI, Computer Science, or related field
- Strong coding skills (Unity or Unreal) and experience working with XR technologies
- Experience with qualitative and quantitative research
- Ideally a first-author publication in HCI or related venue
