Context & Job description
Thesis subject: Nanoplastic Exposure monitored by X-ray fluorescence with focus on plant Uptake from rhizosphere Soil
Soils are increasingly threatened by pollution with small plastic debris, particularly by nanoplastics (<1000 nm), an underexplored fraction that can cross biological barriers and potentially accumulate in the food chain. The present project will specifically focus on the study of the rhizosphere, the compartment in which nanoplastics will enter in contact with plants roots and where the potential absorption will take place. An innovative approach will combine Europium-doped and non-doped nanoplastics. The doped particles will enable mechanistic studies and support the development of detection methods for environmentally relevant nanoplastics. The project will also involve the development of a dedicated rhizobox system to study nanoplastics under realistic soil conditions. Main tasks will include:
- Investigation of the effect of nanoplastics exposure on root exudations patterns and on the role rhizosphere physico-chemistry on nanoplastics uptake.
- Use of Advanced synchrotron-based nano X-ray fluorescence (XRF) at the ID21 beamline to achieve cellular-scale localization of nanoplastics in plant tissues.
- Development of quantification and visualization methods for non-doped nanoplastics.
- Determination of phytoxicity endspoints mainly related with root archecture and cell wall development
