Project Overview:Are you interested in how diet influences mental health and brain function? This PhD explores how bioactive compounds in cocoa may support mood, cognition and psychological wellbeing.

Mental health disorders and cognitive decline are growing global challenges, with increasing interest in dietary strategies as accessible, low-risk interventions. Flavonoids—naturally occurring compounds in plant-based foods—have been linked to improved cognitive performance and wellbeing. Cocoa is a rich source of flavanols, which may affect brain function via cerebral blood flow and the gut microbiome.

This project addresses key evidence gaps using a novel high-flavanol cocoa product developed by an industry partner. Unlike previous research, it enables investigation of dose–response effects within realistic dietary intake.

This interdisciplinary PhD spans psychology, nutrition and biological sciences, combining evidence synthesis with experimental and clinical research. You will conduct a systematic review, develop and pilot study protocols, and undertake both pre-clinical and clinical research. Laboratory work will explore how cocoa flavanols are metabolised by the gut microbiome, while at least two human trials will examine effects on mood, cognition, stress and gut health.

You will gain training in clinical trials, biological and psychological assessment, data analysis and scientific communication, while collaborating with industry. This project is ideal for candidates interested in mental health, diet and interdisciplinary research.
