Post-Postbaccalaureate Research Fellow

The Kenyon College Chemistry Department seeks qualified applicants for a full-time, post-postbaccalaureate position in the lab of Prof. Getzler. This position is funded through grant from the NSF to study controlled polymer degradation. The immediate goal of our program is synthesis and characterization of linear and cyclic polyesters via ring-opening polymerization of commercially available and novel lactones using coordination compounds. Several novel lactones are in hand on multi-gram scales and their syntheses are well developed. Initial polymerization conditions are established and preliminary degradation studies have been conducted. This position is designed for those intending to pursue graduate studies in synthetic chemistry.

Responsibilities

The Fellow will contribute to all stages of research – including laboratory management, research design, literature background, experiments, data collection and analysis, and writing reports and papers. Through this involvement, the Fellow will develop the skills necessary to succeed in a PhD program in chemistry.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in Chemistry or a related field, completed by the start of the appointment;
  • Research experience in synthetic chemistry (organic, organometallic, or inorganic);
  • Intention to pursue graduate studies in Chemistry or a related field;
  • A commitment to undergraduate education, and a strong interest in developing teaching and mentoring skills;
  • The ability and motivation to work independently and in small teams, to collaborate with faculty and other collaborating researchers, and to mentor undergraduate researchers.

To Apply

All application materials must be submitted electronically through Kenyon's employment website: https://careers.kenyon.edu. Application review will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Questions may be directed to Prof. Getzler (getzlery@kenyon.edu).

Applications should include a cover letter (1–2 pages) addressing past research experience, scientific interests, and professional goals as they relate to the position, a curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references. References will be contacted only for candidates who advance to the final stages of the search process.
