The rapidly growing Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler School of Engineering at Chapman University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position in the interdisciplinary area of generative AI, computer graphics, computer-aided design, human-computer interaction, and immersive technology effective for the 2026-2027 academic year. The start date is negotiable.
We are seeking highly motivated individuals to join Dr. Trudi Qi’s research group. Dr. Qi’s research interests focus on intelligent, human-centered 3D content creation and spatial interaction in extended reality with applications in manufacturing, education, and healthcare. The ideal candidate will have strong generative AI design and development, data analysis, and writing skills, the ability to work collaboratively and independently, and a solid record of publications.
Responsibilities
The postdoctoral researcher will conduct independent research and/or collaborate on multiple research projects; provide guidance and support to undergraduate/graduate students associated with the related projects; document research activities and publish key findings in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals and top-tier conferences in the related field.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- A doctoral or equivalent degree in computer science, engineering, data science, or related fields is required at the time of employment and awarded within the last five years.
- Strong research experience in machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, or related fields.
- Excellent verbal and written skills and strong programming skills.
- A record of research productivity, such as peer-reviewed publications, open-source projects, or equivalent research outputs.
- Applicants for this position must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in computer graphics, geometric modeling, and/or 3D shape analysis.
- Experience with multimodal AI, vision-language models, human motion/gesture data, or human-centered AI systems.
- Experience with VR/AR/XR development is a plus.
- Experience with user-centered research, system evaluation, or human-subject studies is a plus.
- Experience mentoring undergraduate or graduate students.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
