A newly established position is now available to work as part of the Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Trailblazer program at James Cook University. 

Position details

  • Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Vanadium ore characterisation 
  • Full-time and fixed term to 31 October 2027
  • Located at the Townsville, Bebegu Yumba campus, Douglas, in North Queensland
  • Academic Level A $78,220 - $104,521 per annum + up to 17% employer superannuation contributions.

What you can accomplish in the role 

This position is part of the Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Trailblazer program at James Cook University. This position involves close collaboration with Critical Minerals Queensland and external industry stakeholders. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will undertake research focused on characterisation of a) vanadium from various horizons of the Toolebuc Formation and b) various tailings samples to inform decisions regarding characterisation techniques, ore extraction, tailings handling, and environmental management. Working in collaboration with researchers from Earth and Physical sciences, Engineering, and industry collaborators/partners, the Postdoctoral Research Fellow will conduct research, develop and/or contribute to research publications as a member of a high performing team and ensure all key research outcomes and milestones are achieved in alignment with project timelines.

The ambition to establish a strong research portfolio, as well as capacity to contribute to the growth of the research culture within the College of Science and Engineering, the Economic Geology Research Centre (EGRU) and the University are also inherent requirements of the position. 

Qualifications, skills and experience required

  • A PhD qualification or equivalent in Geology, or related disciplines
  • Demonstrated experience in the fields of mineralogy, petrology, economic geology and/or geochemistry.
  • Experience in geological materials characterisation through instrumental methods such as EPMA, SEM, LA-ICPMS, XRD etc.
  • A proven track record in research publication.
