Postdoctoral Researcher in Space Law

Based in the College of Business and Law at the Adelaide City Campus East

Full-time (1.0FTE), fixed term contract until September 2028 with further extension possible contingent on available funding

$114,917 to $135,392 (Level B) plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation will apply

The Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral researcher in the area of space law, with a focus of in-situ resource utilisation and sustainability.

You will work in a dynamic and multi-disciplinary team that addresses issues of human uses of outer space, including in-situ resource utilisation, human-robot teaming, space governance and the support systems needed to sustain a human presence in outer space.

You will also mentor graduate students and guide their projects in collaboration with other post-doctoral researchers and the group leaders.

This role will drive cutting-edge research in space law and sustainability, strengthening the University’s leadership in space governance while shaping national and international approaches to responsible in-situ resource utilisation. Its impact extends beyond academia, informing industry, government and global policy on the future of human activity in outer space.

The team

The position reports to the Professor, Space Law and Governance and includes collaboration with our national and international partners, and the opportunity to participate in a range of space related projects with partners in engineering, science and psychology.

Experience

To join our community and thrive in this role, you will likely have the following skills and experience:

  • A PhD or equivalent degree (or thesis submitted) in law, preferably with a focus on space law/ technology law.
  • Experience in research report writing and ability to write applications for research funding.
  • Demonstrated research excellence, including a publication track record in relevant journals and conferences.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research in addition to working effectively as a member of a research team.
  • Ability to undertake interdisciplinary research.
  • Interest in and engagement with principles of sustainability and governance.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Good organisational and time management skills.
  • Commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion, and ability to contribute to the diversity of the school community.
