About the Role
This role sits within IT Services as part of the AI & Automation (AAA) Programme, which is embedding AI and automation into how Queen Mary University of London operates. The AAA team delivers a portfolio of projects covering user-facing AI agents, integrations across university systems and new microservices that automate and improve day-to-day university processes.
About You
The Postgres Database Administrator designs, builds and operates the PostgreSQL databases that AAA services rely on. The postholder works alongside backend developers and platform engineers to make the databases reliable, performant and secure, and partners with the Technical Business Analyst and source-system owners on schema, migration and integration design.
This is a hands-on Postgres database administration role. The emphasis is on strong PostgreSQL fundamentals across performance tuning, replication, backup and recovery, and security, applied to production databases running on Kubernetes via CloudNativePG. CloudNativePG experience specifically is welcome but not the primary bar; strong general Postgres experience and a readiness to operate it on Kubernetes are.
The postholder will hold a Bachelors Degree and/or equivalent experience.
About the Department
The postholder will join a small, high-impact engineering team within IT Services, working alongside backend developers, platform engineers and the Technical Business Analyst on a growing portfolio of AAA services. The postholder will partner with engineering throughout the lifecycle of each service, from database design and schema evolution through to in-life operations and incident response. The role reports to the Programme Director for AI Automation, Apps and Strategy.
