Principal Research Scientist
Job Summary
Reporting to senior faculty member with an interdisciplinary research group spanning physics and chemistry, manages and directs laboratory administrative personnel and researchers. This position is with Park Research Group at Harvard University. The Park Group is affiliated with the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Department of Physics, and Quantum Science and Engineering Program at Harvard University. The group focuses on fundamental studies of nanoscale electrical, optical, and plasmonic devices that operate based upon quantum mechanical principles, as well as the development of new nano- and microelectronic tools that can interface with living cells, cell networks, and organisms.
Job-Specific Responsibilities
Executes the preparation and submission of scientific, financial, and administrative documents and reports including correspondence, reports, grants, and center grant proposals. Responsible for monitoring the progress of research projects and preparing scientific sections of progress reports. In collaboration with the PI and Laboratory Administrator, develops and implements research and financial plans, long-range financial forecasts and strategies for utilizing existing resources and identifying additional opportunities. Develops project milestones and deliverables for research initiatives; prepares scientific portions of reports that summarize key progress and issues on development programs. Develops and presents communication materials to publicize the research program for both members of the research community and the general public; this will include domestic and international travel. Partners with news organizations to publicize research accomplishments. Provides supervision and mentorship for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows performing selected research projects with the PI's research program. Participates in setting constructive agendas for effective and efficient group/team meetings. Assures appropriate follow-up to meetings by communicating action steps to team members and relevant parties outside of the team and tracks progress through completion. Provides advice and assists PI on research-related space and facilities needs. Designated approver for major equipment and laboratory purchases over $1,000. Facilitates the purchase/installation of laboratory equipment and systems. Disseminates and enforces laboratory safety protocols and procedures. Facilitates technologies transfer activities including patent applications and coordination/facilitation of collaborative research. Where appropriate, publishes the research emanating from the research that s/he is involved with. Administrates and scientifically contributes to large project grants involving the PI's research program. Performs other responsibilities as necessitated by the position or as assigned.
Working Conditions
This position is based on-site at a Harvard campus location. The position requires 5 days in office per week.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications: Ph.D. in physical chemistry, physics, or materials science with relevant specialties. A minimum of 5 years of experience in a research or academic environment.
Additional Qualifications and Skills: Grants management experience essential. Strong project management skills with demonstrated ability to effectively keep teams, projects and deliverables on track and to evaluate plans and methods, revising as appropriate. Commitment to contributing to the progress of science research by facilitating the work of others. Ability to think strategically, set priorities, exert influence, negotiate, collaborate, and deliver results. Supervisory experience with demonstrated leadership ability. Superb written and verbal communication skills. Strong ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Interpersonal skills that promote collaboration and cooperation among teams. Must be able to coordinate multiple tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines.
