Location: College Lane Campus, Hatfield

The School of Physics, Engineering & Computer Science is seeking to appoint a Principal Technical Officer (Physics & Astronomy) to lead and support our Physics & Astronomy technical operations. The School offers a range of degrees including Physics, Robotics & AI, Computer Science, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Automotive Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Alongside our undergraduate teaching we support research in multiple, impactful research areas including Climate & Atmospheric Science, Bio-detection, Nanotechnology, Materials, Energy & sustainable Design and more.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Principal Technical Officer (Physics & Astronomy) will lead and manage a team of technical staff, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of laboratories and observatory facilities at both the Spectra building and Bayfordbury Observatory. They will ensure equipment is in good condition and is used under the necessary certificates of maintenance, calibration and validation, and prepare materials for teaching and research activities. The role involves complying with all Health and Safety regulations and instigating the ordering and maintenance of stock levels and minor equipment as required for practical sessions, in consultation with academic staff. The post holder will assist when required, with consultancy work and research within the school and when required assist at key university events throughout the year (Open days, Planned Visits, Open Evenings and other events).

Skills and experience required

The successful candidate will have proven professional experience of working in a laboratory/workshop environment, with an understanding of the importance of Health and Safety processes and ability to produce activity-based Risk Assessments. Previous experience in observational astronomy or similar relevant area, including obtaining and processing images and final data products and experience in telescope operation and maintenance is essential, alongside professional experience of maintaining an efficient technical operation.

You will have a positive can-do attitude, be flexible and adaptable in approach and have good communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with staff, students, and visitors. Programming experience, ideally Python is essential as is a high standard of accuracy, neatness and safe practice including good time management.

Qualifications required

You will be educated with a minimum of a Degree in a STEM subject or related technical subject or equivalent or proven work experience.
