A permanent position as Professor of Epidemiology specialising in cardiovascular diseases. The post is based at the Department of Clinical Sciences in Malmö.

Job responsibilities

The role primarily involves research but also includes teaching and participation in management duties at the Faculty of Medicine.

Lund University is ideally placed to conduct epidemiological research thanks to its access to several large research databases containing extensive phenotyping data and biobank samples, such as the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study, the Malmö Offspring Study, the Malmö Preventive Medicine Study, Men Born 1914, Healthy Ageing in Skåne (GÅS), and the Swedish Cardiopulmonary BioImage Study (SCAPIS).

The successful candidate is expected to conduct independent research of a very high standard, both nationally and internationally, in the field of epidemiology relating to cardiovascular diseases. The appointment is intended to strengthen and foster strategically important research in cardiovascular epidemiology at the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University.

Teaching and course development at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels also form an important part of the role.

The successful candidate is expected to be prepared to take up the post of research group leader at the Department of Clinical Sciences in Malmö. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to carry out other duties normally associated with a professorship, such as administrative tasks and internal and external positions of trust. The professor is expected to represent the discipline at national and international level and to engage with society at large.

Other duties may also be required.

Eligibility

Eligible for appointment as a professor in accordance with Section 3 of Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance is someone who has demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical expertise.

The applicant must have completed a course in higher education pedagogy lasting at least five weeks. If the appointee is deemed to have valid reasons for not having completed a five-week course in higher education pedagogy upon taking up the post, they must complete such a course within two years of taking up the post (see Lund University’s Appointment Rules).

For teachers at Lund University, the general eligibility requirement is that they are suitable for the role and possess the necessary abilities to perform their duties effectively.

Assessment criteria

The applicant must demonstrate excellent academic and teaching ability relevant to the subject. In the assessment, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific competence.

The applicant’s academic ability is demonstrated through current, pioneering and independent research of a very high international standard.

Publications in international scientific journals, as well as national and international grants obtained through competitive processes as the principal applicant, will be taken into account.

Furthermore, the applicant must also demonstrate the ability to initiate and lead national and international research collaborations. The applicant must demonstrate the ability to contribute to future research developments. Future plans and vision will be given due consideration. Recent and relevant experience in translational and/or clinical research and research collaborations is preferred.

The applicant must demonstrate teaching skills relevant to the subject area, both in terms of teaching and supervision at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. This is demonstrated through the ability to plan, deliver, lead and develop education and training.

In addition, great importance will be attached to the ability demonstrated in academic leadership and collaboration. The applicant must demonstrate the ability and potential to lead and develop operations. This is demonstrated through documented leadership qualities, for example through management roles, positions of trust, leadership training, or leadership in research environments, interdisciplinary projects or consortia. Leadership skills also include strong communication and collaboration skills, the ability to support employees’ professional development, and the ability to contribute to a positive working environment. Experience of leadership in an international context is an advantage.

Consideration will also be given to proficiency in participating in organisational development and collaboration, and the ability to engage with the wider community. This is demonstrated through experience and the ability to communicate research findings and to establish collaborations with researchers across different disciplines, as well as with relevant stakeholders outside academia. The ability to disseminate knowledge and to help implement research findings in society or clinical practice is an advantage.
