The University of Wuppertal invites applications for a professorship in numerical analysis. The position will be based in the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Through the institutes PHI (Port-Hamiltonian Institute), IMACM (Institute for Mathematical Modeling, Analysis and Computational Mathematics), and IZMD (Interdisciplinary Center for Machine Learning and Data Analytics), we offer an excellent environment for challenging research and collaborations. We are looking for an outstanding personality who will continuously develop this area in research and teaching.
DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS
- Relevant, internationally visible research in a cutting-edge field of numerical mathematics, preferably in one of the areas of numerical methods in systems theory, numerical methods for high-dimensional problems, mimetic methods, model order reduction, machine learning enhanced numerical methods.
- Clear links to other research areas within the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
- Willingness to actively participate in the relevant institutes at the University of Wuppertal, such as PHI (Port-Hamiltonian Institute), IMACM (Institute for Mathematical Modelling, Analysis and Computational Mathematics), IZMD (Interdisciplinary Center for Machine Learning and Data Analytics), and the AI4EF (Artificial Intelligence for Empowering the Future) research area.
- The professor is expected to enhance the existing Collaborative Research Centre 1701 “Port-Hamiltonian Systems” and participate in the application for a continuation.
- In teaching, the professor contributes to and complements the range of courses in the field of numerical analysis and computer sciences in the Mathematics and Computer Science degree programs. They also support the Computer Simulations in Science Master program, the teacher training programs and the support services for programs in other faculties.
- Participation in academic self-administration is considered a matter of course.
- The professor is expected to secure competitive external funding and publish relevant research findings in international, peer-reviewed journals.
- It is expected that adequate German language skills will be achieved within the first two years of employment, namely at level B2 within the first year and at level C1 within two years at the latest.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completed degree (master or equivalent from university or university of applied sciences) in Mathematics
- Special aptitude for academic work, usually demonstrated by the quality of a doctorate, preferably on a topic relevant to the advertised position
- Relevant scientific achievements attained in the context of a first professorship, such as junior professorship, habilitation, employment as a research assistant at a university or at a non-university research institution and scientific positions in industry, in administration or another social field in Germany or abroad
- Pedagogical aptitude, which is proven by appropriate previous experience or, exceptionally, demonstrated in the appointment procedure
- A proven track record in research, including relevant international, peer-reviewed publications, is required.
- Experience in acquiring third-party funding, particularly in coordinated programs, is desirable.
