Job Description

Raritan Valley Community College's Aseptic Biomanufacturing department is currently seeking a part-time Lab Technician.

Essential Duties

Core Laboratory Support

• Prepare, label, and organize reagents, buffers, media, and solutions and other lab materials.
• Sterilize glassware, instruments, and consumables using autoclaves or other methods.
• Set up equipment and materials needed for experiments.
• Keep lab and cleanroom clean and orderly at all times, especially when visitors are expected.

Experimental Assistance

• Assist instructors with routine procedures such as pipetting, culturing cells or microbes, and preparing samples.
• Collect, process, and store biological samples following proper protocols.

Safety and Compliance

• Follow biosafety and chemical safety guidelines (BSL 1/BSL 2 depending on the lab).
• Dispose of biological and chemical waste properly.
• Conduct routine safety checks (e.g., eyewash stations, PPE stock, spill kits).

Equipment and Facility Maintenance

• Clean and organize lab benches, incubators, refrigerators, and shared spaces.
• Calibrate and maintain basic lab equipment (balances, pH meters, pipettes).
• Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs.

Inventory and Supply Management

• Monitor stock levels of reagents, consumables, and PPE.
• Receive, unpack, and store incoming supplies.
• Maintain inventory logs and reorder materials when needed.
• Maintain neat and orderly storage space for lab materials.

Collaboration and Communication

• Coordinate with instructors, program administrator, and Director of Aseptic Biomanufacturing.
• Attend lab and staff meetings when required.
• Ensure students are following policies and procedures of lab safety at all times.

Administrative Duties

• Keeping student documents in order in Teams, Sharepoint, or other database software.
• Preparing course materials prior to course start date.
• Preparing classrooms for instructors prior to course start date, ensuring all materials are in the classroom.
• Assist in collecting forms from students when necessary.

Requirements

• Associate or bachelor's degree in biology field.
• Experience with inventory tracking.
• Available to work 15-20 hours per week.
• Ability to work independently and recognize when to seek assistance.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior lab experience in an academic or industry setting.
• Demonstrated experience maintaining and tracking inventory.
• Commitment to maintaining a clean, orderly lab and cleanroom environment, with pride in supporting overall program success.

Physical Demands

The physical activities of this position include: sitting, standing, bending, kneeling and/or crouching, walking, lifting and carrying packages and occasionally climbing a ladder.
