Public Safety Officer, Part-Time

Reports To: Assistant Director of Public Safety
Location: Hickory, NC
Position Summary
This position provides a safe and secure campus environment by monitoring university property, enforcing campus policies and responding to and documenting incidents. The role supports campus safety through routine patrols, incident investigation and reporting, coordination with local law enforcement, and participation in crime prevention and educational programs for students, faculty and staff. This position requires professionalism, integrity and a strong commitment to serving the university community.
Job Duties
- Provide for the safety of all persons on campus property.
- Ensure security of campus buildings.
- Enforce campus rules, regulations and policies as set forth by university administration.
- Properly investigate and report all crimes and incidents.
- Maintain liaison with area law enforcement.
- Participate in providing crime prevention programs to the students, faculty and staff.
- Provide for support of full-time officers by filling shifts or enhancing shifts as required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs or more.
- Ability to walk long distances across campus.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- High school diploma.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- No criminal record.
- Law enforcement experience or BLET a plus, but not required.
Work Schedule
- This position requires flexible part-time availability of 10-29 hours per week based on institutional needs.
- Shifts include first, second, and third shift coverage, with occasional weekends and overnight shifts required.
- Scheduling is variable and may be adjusted to support campus operations, special events, and emergency or contingency response needs.
