Job Description:
Bellarmine University Office of Public Safety has an opening for a full-time Public Safety Sergeant. Reporting to the Public Safety Captain, this position serves as a departmental leader, aiming to provide a safe and hospitable campus environment for all campus community members.
This position is scheduled for a 40-hour work week. However, applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends and holidays.
Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Resolves operational problems. Investigates situations and complaints, defines solutions, meets with public safety staff and other involved parties. Makes decisions on information received.
- Acts as a First Responder to calls for service, criminal incidents, alarms, and medical emergencies that require the potential use of a defibrillator and/or other First-Aid techniques.
- Takes appropriate action in the event of criminal incidents, fire or medical emergencies. Assigns staff, directs as necessary, reviews reports, provides information to campus community and officers by notifying appropriate personnel.
- Enforces campus parking regulations.
- Conducts patrols of campus premises by driving marked cars or other vehicles with official University.
- Coordinates work schedules and assignments of officers within assigned area of responsibility. Works with other sergeants and the captain in best utilizing staff resources to accomplish departmental goals and objectives.
- Assists in providing updated training on the latest practices in public safety procedures.
- Maintains officer accountability and ensures assigned tasks are being completed during the shift.
- Writes officer performance reviews and recommends discipline for review and approval by the captain.
- Maintains current knowledge of laws, college and department policies and procedures, and public safety methods and practices.
Performs all duties with proper attention improving relations between the University community and local law enforcement agencies as a whole.
Performs tasks in direct support and assigned by the captain or director.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications for Consideration:
- Minimum of a High School diploma
- One year as an officer with Bellarmine University
- Certification in CPR and First Aid or obtain within 6 months of hire
- Must possess effective leadership, oral and written communication skills
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Must be able to stand and walk for an extensive amount of time
- Must be willing to engage and perform in stressful situations
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule & work overtime as needed
- Must be willing to work on-call status as needed
