Position Highlights
The Range Manager will perform tasks related to research support for agriculture, ecology and natural resources, education, outreach, and development at the Santa Rita Experimental Range (SRER). The Range Manager will live in provided housing at the SRER, Florida Work Station headquarters located in the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains. As a condition of employment, it is mandatory that the employee lives in University of Arizona provided housing on site at the SRER headquarters.
This is a full-time position that reports to the Campus Agricultural Center, located at 4101 N. Campbell Avenue in Tucson. The Range Manager will work under the supervision of the Director of the Southern Arizona Experiment Station (SAES) and in cooperation with the onsite personnel of the SRER. This position requires a flexible schedule to meet operational needs, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Aids SAES Director and SRER Director for Research to assist leaders of research and outreach projects by understanding their research needs, communicating the capacity of the SRER to meet those needs, and developing their Range Use Agreements.
- Provides support for research, teaching, and extension programs.
- Establishes a working relationship with Santa Rita Ranch LLC for general communication, cost sharing, and collaboration of projects.
- Serves in supervisory role with Student Conservation Association regarding SRER related projects.
- Works with SAES Director to develop and lead community engagement initiatives to promote the SRER's mission, research, and educational programs to local communities, schools, and professional groups.
- Represents the SRER at meetings, workshops, and outreach events, increasing visibility and fostering partnerships with academic, governmental, and private organizations.
- Collaborates with communication teams to highlight SRER research achievements through newsletters, social media, and press releases.
- Conveys SRER mission, history, programs, and policies with public and professional groups visiting and using the SRER, news media, and other stakeholders.
- Communicates with SRER users about safety and restricted use situations such as wildland fires and firearm use.
- Interprets and enforces rules and regulations for SRER operation.
- Supervises and coordinates all SRER volunteer functions including basic duties, events and recruitment.
- Develops, plans, schedules, monitors, and participates in work projects and activities such as rangeland inventory and monitoring, project development and support for SRER related research, infrastructure installation, range gauge monitoring program, renovations, range improvements, fund-raising events, and SRER education and outreach activities.
- Works with the SRER team to develop a variety of reports, plans, and initiatives including grazing plans, annual reports, monthly rain gauge reports, requests for resources, responses to local development proposals, etc.
- Maintains a safe working environment and follows all University safety protocols, including field, vehicle, and equipment safety.
- Manages cabin and bunkhouse usage at the headquarters area, which includes reservations, contracts, insurance paperwork, revenue collection, safety, security, and custodial duties.
- Assists with trash pickup across the SRER and rain gauge monitoring, including incorporation of new digital recording processes.
- Works collaboratively with staff to support SRER infrastructure and operations.
- Participates in professional development opportunities related to rangeland management, research support, and outreach.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
- Working knowledge of rangeland plants.
- Horticulture/agriculture knowledge.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Ability to live in University-provided on-site housing as a condition of employment.
- Must be able to move/transport up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work well/safely solo and with others outside in all weather conditions.
- Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree.
- Experience working in natural resources.
- Experience working with equipment, power tools, and a variety of vehicle types including UTV's and 4x4 vehicles.
