RECRUITMENT OF 1 (ONE) ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN THE FIELD OF MATHEMATICS TEACHING, WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS OF THE FACULTY OF EXACT SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING
By Order No. 252/R/2026, of the Rector of the University of Madeira, dated September 4, 2026, and for thirty working days, from the day immediately following that on which this Notice is published in the Diário da República, an international selection procedure is open for 1 (one) Assistant Professor, in the subject field of Mathematics Teaching, within the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Exact Sciences and Engineering, under articles 37 to 51, 61 and 62-A of the University Teaching Career Statute (Estatuto da Carreira do Pessoal Docente Universitária (ECDU)), republished by Decree-Law No. 205/2009, of 31 August and amended by Law No. 8/2010, de 13 May, the Regulation for the Recruitment, Selection and Hiring of Teaching Staff of the University of Madeira, Regulation No. 268/2014, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 122, of June 27, 2014, with the new wording given by Regulation No. 851/2022, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 169, of 1 September 2022.
The joint order No. 373/2000, of 31 March, of the Minister of State and Public Administration and the Minister for Equality, made it compulsory to include the following statement in all public service recruitment procedures: "In compliance with subparagraph h) of article 9 of the Constitution, the Public Administration, as an employing entity, actively promotes a policy of equality of opportunities between men and women in access to employment and professional development, scrupulously providing for the prevention of any type of discrimination".
I - Admission requirements:
1 - Pursuant to Article 41-A of the ECDU, candidates must hold a doctoral degree.
2 - Candidates with foreign degrees must prove the certification, equivalence or the recognition of their PhD degree by a Portuguese university, in accordance with the applicable legislation.
3 - Equivalence, recognition and registration of the doctoral degree must be obtained by the application deadline.
4- Candidates must also meet the general requirements for employment in public functions, as set out in Law No. 35/2014, published in the Diário da República, 1st series, No. 117, of 20 June:
a) Not to be inhibited from carrying out public service nor be forbidden to perform the functions for which they are applying;
b) Have the physical robustness and psychological profile required to carry out the duties for which they are applying;
c) Comply with compulsory vaccination.
II - Profile for which the position is open:
The position is open for the standard teaching profile 'M' (mixed profile of teaching, research and service to the University), as defined in the Faculty Workload Allocation of the University of Madeira, Regulation No. 420/2014, published in the Diário da República, 2nd Series, No. 183, on 23 September 2014.
III – Application Instructions:
1 - In accordance with the ECDU, and in line with the Regulation for the Recruitment, Selection and Hiring of Faculty Staff of the University of Madeira, the admission statement for this selection procedure, which is available on the website of the Human Resources Unit, must include the following documents:
- An updated curriculum vitae of the candidate indicating the activities carried out within teaching, research and knowledge valorisation, academic service and university management and other activities relevant to their teaching and scientific performance, as well as to the mission of the University, with particular emphasis on the activities considered relevant to the subject area for which the competition is open, in line with the parameters set out in the Notice for the evaluation and ranking of candidates. The candidate shall also identify up to five publications/works that he/she considers to be the most representative, particularly in terms of their contribution to advancing the field(s) for which the procedure is open. This selection must come with a short descriptive explanation of their contribution;
- A copy of the publications/works mentioned in the curriculum vitae as the most representative;
- Documents proving that the candidate meets the requirements set out in the Notice, in the Admission requirements;
- Candidates who are not Portuguese nationals or who come from a country where Portuguese is not the official language must also submit a sworn statement stating that, if selected for the position, they undertake to acquire Portuguese language proficiency (written and spoken) within one year of signing the contract, enabling them to carry out their teaching duties without any communication limitations.
2 - The documents proving the fulfilment of the conditions set out in paragraph 4 of item I of this Notice may be waived, provided that the candidates declare, in the admission requirement, under a commitment of honour, that they meet such requirements. Candidates filling the position must provide documents to support the information they have provided in their application.
3 - Applications must be submitted on a specific form, which is available on the website of the Human Resources Unit of the University of Madeira, filled in in Portuguese, which, together with the attached documents, must be delivered in paper format, and in person to the Human Resources Unit, located at Colégio dos Jesuítas, Rua dos Ferreiros, 9000-082, Funchal, during office hours (10:00-12:30 and 14:30-16:00), or sent by registered post before the closing date for applications.
4 - Candidates must also send an expression of interest (application), by email, to procedimentos.concursais@mail.uma.pt, before the closing date for applications, together with all the documents required in the notice, in portable document format (PDF) (file names shall not exceed 15 characters), using a link with no expiration date.
Candidates must also indicate the number of the selection procedure notice they are applying for in the email subject line and list the PDF documents they are sending in the email body.
5 - The application must be organised in the order set out in the notice.
6 - The required documents must be presented in Portuguese or English.
7 - Failure to submit an application and supporting documents that fully and explicitly comply with the requirements set out in Section III, in terms of both form and content; or failure to meet the deadline for submitting the application, in hard and digital copy formats; or failure to submit, or the late submission of, any of the mandatory documents referred to in the sub-points of Section III, is ground for exclusion.
IV - Admission to the competition:
1 - Following analysis of the applications, the Rector will notify the candidates of their admission or exclusion from the selection procedure based on whether they meet the requirements laid down therein.
V - Approval on absolute merit:
1 - Before ordering the admitted candidates, the jury shall deliberate on the approval or non-approval on absolute merit, by a justified roll-call vote. Abstentions are not allowed.
2 - The candidate who receives a favourable vote from more than half of the voting members of the jury shall be considered approved on absolute merit.
3 - The approval of candidates based on absolute merit will depend on whether they cumulatively meet the following criteria:
- Hold a PhD in the subject area of the selection procedure;
- Have a global curriculum considered by the jury as having scientific merit, research capacity and pedagogical activity already developed, compatible with the subject area(s) of the selection procedure and appropriate to the teaching category.
VI - Seriation of candidates approved on absolute merit:
Candidates approved on absolute merit will be evaluated and ranked by the jury, in relative merit, according to item X of this Notice, considering the evaluation and seriation criteria set out in item IX of said Notice.
VII - Selection procedure
The selection procedure includes the following stages and tasks:
a) The application submission period;
b) Publication of the list of admitted candidates;
c) Requesting or waiving additional documentation from candidates;
d) Conducting or waiving a public hearing with candidates;
e) Approval on absolute merit and publication of the list of approved candidates;
f) Seriation of candidates approved on absolute merit and issuing the final decision, and publication of the minutes and ordered list of approved candidates on absolute merit;
g) Sending the documents to the Rector;
h) Homologation of the results of the selection procedures and its minutes by the Rector and notification of the results.
VIII - Composition of the Jury:
Under the terms of Article 53(2) of the Regulation for the Recruitment, Selection and Hiring of Teaching Staff of the University of Madeira, Regulation No. 268/2014, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 122, of 27 June 2014, with the new wording given by Regulation No. 851/2022, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 169, of 1 September 2022, the jury comprises the following members:

Doutora Hélia Margarida Aparício Pintão de Oliveira, Professora Associada do Instituto de Educação da Universidade de Lisboa;
Doutora Susana Paula Graça Carreira, Professora Associada da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade do Algarve;
Doutor José Luís da Silva, Professor Associado do Departamento de Matemática da Faculdade de Ciências Exatas e da Engenharia da Universidade da Madeira;
Doutora Sandra Maria Freitas Mendonça, Professora Associada do Departamento de Matemática da Faculdade de Ciências Exatas e da Engenharia da Universidade da Madeira.
IX - Criteria for selecting and ranking candidates:
1. Candidates are evaluated and ranked based on their capacity to fulfil the following aspects of the teaching staff service provision, in compliance with the general rules set out in Article 20 of the Regulation for the Recruitment, Selection and Hiring of Teaching Staff of the University of Madeira:
2. Teaching activity - 40%;
3. Research activities and knowledge valorisation - 50%
4. Academic service activities and university management - 10%
5. The following parameters should be considered for each of these criteria:
6. Teaching activity - Evaluation in this component will consider the following specific criteria and parameters:
7. Coordination and teaching of curricular units, at a higher education level, within different study cycles, particularly within the field of the selection procedure - 55%;
8. Supervision of undergraduate and master's students or of courses/activities not awarding degrees — 15%;
9. Enhancing pedagogical projects, including new curricular units, developing teaching laboratories and similar activities; exchange, mobility and cooperation actions — 15%;
10. Production of pedagogical material, including books, articles in pedagogical publications and other documents to support students, and pedagogical innovation activities or development of pedagogical laboratories - 15%;
11. Research activities and knowledge valorisation - Evaluation in this component will consider the following specific criteria and parameters:
12. Scientific output in the form of authorship of articles in scientific journals, books, book chapters and conference proceedings in the field of the selection procedure. This parameter should consider the importance of the works that have been selected by the candidate as most representative, particularly regarding the development of the subject area(s) for which the selection procedure is open - 55%;
13. Coordination and participation in national and international research projects, research units and networks, particularly within the subject area(s) of the selection procedure - 10%;
14. Supervision of doctoral or post-doctoral students - 10%;
15. Editing scientific books and participating in scientific committees and conference organising committees - 10%;
16. Other activities and awards demonstrating scientific merit and national and international acknowledgement, and university outreach activities, scientific dissemination, the valorisation and transfer of knowledge, and innovation - 15%.
17. Academic service activities and university management - Evaluation in this component will consider the following specific criteria and parameters:
- Participation in university management and coordination positions, within units and organic subunits and degree programmes; in evaluation activities of an academic nature, namely juries of academic exams and career selection procedures; and in other tasks assigned by the management bodies that fall within the university teaching activity - 10%.
XI — Final ordering of candidates and voting methodology:
1 — Before the voting process begins, each jury member must submit a signed document setting out their ranking of the candidates, which will be attached to the minutes, duly substantiated, and based on the evaluation and ranking criteria set out in this notice;
2 — During the successive voting rounds, each jury member must abide by the ranking they have submitted in the document referred to in the preceding paragraph;
3 — Abstentions are not allowed during the voting process.
4 — The jury will use the following voting method to obtain an absolute majority for the final ranking of the candidates:
a) The first voting round is intended to determine the candidate to be ranked first;
i) If a candidate obtains an absolute majority of the votes for the first place, he/she wins the selection procedure and is removed from subsequent ballots. The procedure for determining the second-place candidate shall then begin;
ii) If none of the candidates obtain an absolute majority of the votes for first place, a further voting round will be held, only among those who received votes for the first place, after the candidate who received the fewest votes for that place has been removed;
iii) If there is a tie between two or more candidates for the least-voted position, another ballot will be held to determine which of the least-voted applicants shall be eliminated;
iv) If there is still a tie between two or more candidates for least-voted positions, but the number of candidates in that position has been reduced, a new tie-breaking ballot shall be held, only between those candidates, counting the number of relative first positions, the least voted shall be removed;
v) If there is still a tie between two or more candidates for the least-voted position and the number of candidates has not been reduced, the President of the Jury shall have the casting vote;
vi) If there is a tie when there are only two candidates left to be considered for first place, the President of the Jury shall have the casting vote;
b) Once a candidate has been ranked first, he or she shall be removed from the ballot and the entire process is repeated for second place, and so forth, until an ordered list of all candidates is complete.
