Job Description

RESEARCH POSITION IN AQUACULTURE R&D UNDER THE NRF CREATE-SFA FUNDED PROGRAM ADMINISTERED BY SHARE

We are inviting applications for Research Assistant position under a multidisciplinary research program funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and administered by the Singapore-HUJ Alliance for Research and Enterprise (SHARE).

The project team brings together Principal Investigators (PIs) from the National University of Singapore (NUS), The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJ), A*STAR, Republic Polytechnic (RP), and Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

Successful candidate will support PIs in the execution of the program and will be based either fully or on a rotational basis at one of the local partner institutions: NUS, A*STAR, RP, NTU, or at the Marine Aquaculture Centre, St John’s Island. The project also involves close partnerships with local fish farms.

We are seeking individuals who are enthusiastic, qualified, and motivated to contribute to impactful research in the fields of aquaculture R&D. The successful candidate will work with Prof Christoph Winkler and Prof Lior David on research work under a project on SINGAPORE AQUACULTURE SOLUTION CENTER.

Research Assistant: Aquaculture

  • Plan and conduct laboratory-based research in aquaculture, molecular biology and reproductive biology.
  • Assist in experimental design, sample processing, and data collection for aquaculture and molecular biology research projects. Perform routine molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, sequencing preparation, and gene expression analysis.
  • Support research involving genomics, gene expression, reproduction, and stress responses.
  • Conduct laboratory assays related to reproductive biology, including hormone assays, tissue sampling, and molecular diagnostics.
  • Work with live fish, including blood sampling, inducing spawning, and broodstock management.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure proper documentation of experimental procedures and results.
  • Support data analysis, interpretation, and preparation of reports and scientific manuscripts.
  • Work with the project leader and collaborators to achieve project milestones and research objectives.
  • Mentor students involved in final year projects, internships, and attachments.
  • Support procurement of laboratory consumables and assist with general laboratory management.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Life Sciences, Molecular Biology, Aquaculture, Biotechnology, or related field.

Experience:

  • Experience in molecular biology laboratory techniques (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, sequencing preparation) preferred.
  • Knowledge of genetics, genomics, or transcriptomics in aquatic organisms would be an advantage.
  • Strong analytical, documentation, and research skills.
  • Good organisational skills and ability to manage multiple experimental tasks.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Proficient in IT and data management tools.
  • Candidate will be employed on a contract basis and may work across collaborating institutions or laboratories.
