Research Assistant (OR/NBD/JN3)

Job Description

The Signature Research Programme in Neuroscience and Behavioural Disorders (“NBD”) is focused on understanding the structure and function of the nervous system, and the neural mechanisms underlying human neurological, psychiatric and ophthalmological disorders.

A Research Assistant / Associate position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Jun Nishiyama. The lab investigates synaptic function and dysfunction in neuropsychiatric disorders including autism, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease, using cutting-edge molecular biology, genome-editing, and optical approaches.

The selected candidate will perform a variety of research activities within the overall scope of a research project under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or his designate, including but not limited to the following:

Lab operations and administration

  • Assist with general upkeep of laboratory needs such as purchasing of items, tracking of inventory/consumables, maintaining databases, protocols and documentation.
  • Prepare reagents and supplies for the team.
  • Maintain housekeeping of the laboratory and waste disposal in accordance with guidelines.

Animal work (training will be provided)

  • Assist in the mouse colony maintenance such as breeding, plug checks, genotyping and etc.
  • Conduct animal-related experiments in compliance with institutional approvals and ethical requirements.

Wet-lab experiments and documentation

  • Assist with molecular/cell biology experiments such as PCR, cloning, western blotting, cell/neuronal culture, virus production, immunostaining and etc.
  • Conduct accurate monitoring, documenting and reporting of experimental results and/or research findings.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described therein

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science or related field with minimum 1 year of laboratory experience.
  • Prior experience in molecular biology, cell culture, and/or animal handling would be advantage.
  • Possess strong interpersonal communications skills with excellent written, oral communication and computer skills.
  • Have strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
  • A strong team player who is able to learn new techniques and work collaboratively in a team environment.
