Several research assistant positions are available at Aerodynamics Acoustics and Noise control Technology Centre (AANTC), HKUST. The position is part of an exciting opportunity to work with professional sports teams, aerodynamic specialists, and racing car professionals. The successful applicant will participate in a multi-year research project that focuses on experimental, numerical, and analytical methods to investigate and improve the aerodynamic performance and racing strategies of professional cyclists, windsurfers, triathletes and so on. The research will be centred around the large low-noise wind tunnel at HKUST. The computational modelling work will be conducted using on-site and off-site supercomputing facilities. Field tests in collaboration with Hong Kong Sports Institute are also possible. The position can lead to PhD/MPhil opportunities.
Directions
Key responsibilities can be in one or more fields below:
- Mechanical Design & System IntegrationDesign, fabrication, assembly, and commissioning of advanced sports aerodynamics and biomechanical test rigs.
- Computer aided design of test rigs.
- Mobile & Embedded Systems DevelopmentApp development (e.g., Flutter based apps) for sports sensor systems, including data acquisition, communication, and real-time visualization.
- Computer Vision & Motion CaptureDevelopment of vision-based human posture and movement tracking systems for performance analysis.
- Robotics & Control SystemsControl and implementation of 6-degree-of-freedom Stewart platforms and robotic actuation systems.
- Real time control feedback loop
- Force & Sensor InstrumentationIntegration and application of load cells and multi-axis force measurement systems for test rigs.
- Scientific Programming & Data ProcessingDevelopment of experimental control, data acquisition, and analysis pipelines using LabVIEW, MATLAB, and Python.
Requirements
Applicants must hold a Bachelor degree in mechanical, aerospace engineering, electronic and computer engineering or automation. Other key requirements include (but are not necessarily mandatory):
- Familiar with CAD or FEA software.
- Coding capability in MATLAB, LabVIEW and Python.
- Experience in experimental techniques, data processing and uncertainty analysis will be an advantage.
- Experience in electronics and/or robotics system design will be an advantage.
- Technical report writing in English.
- Fluency in English (required) and Mandarin (desirable).
