Job Description

The Signature Research Programme in Emerging Infectious Diseases ("EID") aims to pioneer our understanding of emerging infections through world-class research that integrates immunology, infection biology, pathogen genomics, and computational approaches. This integration drives comprehensive studies of host–pathogen interactions across molecular, individual, and population scales to address emerging health challenges.

This exciting opportunity allows the candidate to contribute to impactful research led by Prof Gavin Smith within EID at Duke-NUS Medical School. We seek a proactive, detail-oriented Research Assistant eager to grow professionally in a collaborative and dynamic environment. He / She will perform a variety of research activities which include planning, organising and conducting research studies within the overall scope of a research project under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or his/her designate, including but not limited to the following:

  • Perform general and human primary cell culture, including differentiation and air-liquid-interface techniques.
  • Perform molecular and cell biology assays, including PCR, RT-PCR, Western Blotting, immunofluorescent staining and histology with precision.
  • Able to handle BSL2 viruses, including virus propagation, infection, and related protocols.
  • Conduct experiments autonomously with high responsibility and accuracy.
  • Assist with general upkeep of laboratory needs, maintain safety protocols, provide technical support and establish work procedures to ongoing research projects.
  • Partner effectively with the Principal Investigator and colleagues, and possess strong interpersonal communications skills with excellent written, oral communication and computer skills.
  • Perform experiments with live laboratory mice, including administering treatments, performing virus infections, and performing post-procedure molecular analyses.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described therein.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences or a related field with strong computer proficiency.
  • Prior experience in cell culture and molecular techniques would be advantageous.
  • Prior experience in mouse handling and animal research is preferred, comprehensive training will be provided in specific areas.
  • Able to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and instructions, as well as the initiative to contribute effectively to new protocol development.
  • Have a proactive attitude and a keen interest in learning and growing within the role.
  • Equipped with effective organisational and interpersonal communications with excellent written, oral communication and computer skills.
  • Have excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
