Job Summary

The Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications for the position of Research Engineer II in our Experimental Combustion Lab, with a focus on gas turbines. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research on combustion processes, particularly in the context of gas turbine technology. This role involves the design, construction, and implementation of experimental setups and data acquisition systems, as well as the analysis and interpretation of combustion data.

Responsibilities

Experimental Setup and Maintenance:

  • Design and fabricate metal components for combustion experiments.
  • Plan and implement processes and instrumentation for combustion experiments and conditions ranging from high-altitude to high-pressure.
  • Design, construct, and maintain hardware and software packages for real-time data collection in combustion experiments.

Project Management:

  • Develop, implement, and update progress using tracking software tools.
  • Monitor and collaborate with trades working on facilities and construction projects.
  • Lead team meetings with students and track the progress of assigned projects.

Collaboration and Mentorship:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to advance combustion research projects.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students along with postdocs by providing guidance on experimental techniques and data analysis.

Required Qualifications

This position vacancy is an open rank announcement. Final job offer will be dependent on candidate qualifications in alignment with Research Faculty ranks as outlined in section 3.2.1 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook.

Research Engineer I

  • Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace Engineering, or related area.

Research Engineer II

  • A Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
  • A Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Aerospace Engineering or related area.

Senior Research Engineer

  • A Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
  • A Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, and nine (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Aerospace Engineering, and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the field of combustion research with gas turbines, high-speed propulsion, detonations, and advanced electro-optical diagnostics.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex experimental systems.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Experience with metal welding and fabrication techniques, including milling and lathe operations.
  • Experience with solid modeling (Siemens NX) to design, plan and develop models of experiments.
  • Experience with fluid systems engineering in experimental setups.
  • Proficiency in Labview, Arduino, and controls for I/O and data collection.
