Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled Research Fellow to join our interdisciplinary project on urban heat island (UHI) mitigation through a novel nowcasting system. Supported by NRF, the project aims to develop a microclimate nowcasting platform that delivers real-time, hyperlocal information on urban heat risks in tropical cities. Leveraging Doppler lidar–based microclimate studies and machine learning, the research emphasizes vulnerable groups such as the elderly, low-income households, individuals with pre-existing health conditions, children, and outdoor workers. By integrating climate science, urban analytics, and social research, the project will generate actionable insights for communities, healthcare providers, educators, and policymakers. Ultimately, it seeks to enhance climate and health resilience while examining how timely climate information can strengthen community networks and encourage adaptive behaviors in a warming urban environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct multi-scale multi-physics numerical simulations, e.g. simulation of thermal environment and airflow movement at the city, district and neighbourhood scales;
  • Publish the research findings on top-tier academic journals and local/international conferences;
  • Organize, and assist technical workshops, networking events and conferences (local and overseas).

Qualifications

  • Candidate must have a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fluid Dynamics, Atmospheric Sciences, Urban Climate, Architecture Engineering, Building Science, or related fields majoring in Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD). Candidate who is in the final stages of PhD studies (i.e. submitted thesis; pending oral defence) may also be considered
  • Well informed and knowledgeable in urban climate modelling;
  • Experienced in using environmental simulation tools, such as UrbanMicroclimateFoam, OpenFOAM, WRF/PALM or other similar programs;
  • Highly motivated individual with capacity to work independently.
  • Good time management and planning;
