Research Fellow in Research Software Engineering

The Astronomy Group of the University of Southampton's Department of Physics & Astronomy is inviting applications for a Research Software Engineer or for a Research Fellow with AI/ML background. This role is central to an MRC funded project aimed at enhancing medical diagnostics through the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence. In this capacity, you will lead the development of algorithms to improve the accuracy and efficiency of medical image analysis, contributing significantly to the creation of innovative diagnostic solutions.

We are looking for candidates with a strong background in computer science or a related field, who have demonstrated expertise in Python and a solid history of working with ML/AI technologies, especially in image processing. A PhD is preferred, but we also highly value practical experience and a portfolio of relevant projects.

This position offers the chance to apply your technical skills to impactful medical research, providing a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement of healthcare diagnostics.

The position is available from May 15th 2026 on a full time basis but flexible working will be considered.

The post is for 12 months and must be started no later than September 1st 2026.

The post may be extended depending on performance and funding availability.
