Research Fellow (Mechatronics & System Integration for Construction Robotics)

Job Description

National University of Singapore (NUS) is seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow to lead the system integration and mechatronics development of a multi-functional modular robot platform for automated construction. This project aims to revolutionize on-site operations across three key trades: precast concrete panel installation, drywall installation, and autonomous material transportation. The successful candidate will lead Track 1 of this project, working closely with industry partners and other research institutes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and mechatronic integration of a shared modular mobile platform equipped with interchangeable manipulators and end-effectors for diverse construction tasks.
  • Develop robust navigation architectures and integrate advanced battery systems for prolonged field operations.
  • Design and implement user interfaces (UI) and control systems for seamless teleoperation and semi-autonomous execution.
  • Collaborate extensively with industrial partners to integrate customized end-effectors and existing mobile bases into a unified ROS/ROS2 ecosystem.
  • Lead hardware-in-the-loop testing, prototyping, and eventual on-site field deployment and productivity validation.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a closely related field.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in robotic system integration, kinematics, and control of mobile manipulators.
  • Proficiency in C++, Python, and the ROS/ROS2 framework.
  • Experience with industrial hardware, motor drives, PLCs, and power management (battery systems).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage complex cross-institutional technical interfaces.
