Research Fellow (Power Electronics)

Job Description

  • Manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI) and the research team members to study, evaluate, propose and innovate advanced power electronics solutions to the electrification applications including EV charging systems, Wireless Power transfer, Thermal/colling management, and Battery Management Systems.
  • Develop digital twins of the detailed electrical power system based on the concept design in real-time simulation environment such as OPAL-RT and/or Typhoon HIL and conduct real time simulation studies/experimentation.
  • Design and develop an intelligent and optimal switching strategies, control techniques, and energy management system (EMS) for the energy efficient and reliable operation.
  • Perform HIL/real-time simulation studies/experiments for various cases to demonstrate performance, challenges, and recommend improvements
  • Dynamic, thermal, and stability analysis of the power electronics systems for given applications and perform system level simulation studies
  • Propose and innovate solutions for operational challenges in hardware such as common mode noise, electromagnetic interference, filter design, etc.
  • Evaluate and recommend efficient and reliable power electronics with other merits of high-density and light-weight.
  • Innovate, design, and test the relevant power electronics and drives system hardware and troubleshoot the challenging problems.
  • Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations.
  • Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment and assist in laboratory management.
  • Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers.
  • Mentor students involved in the research project
  • For those hired at senior levels, management responsibilities may be included

Qualifications

  • Have a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent from a recognized University with major in Power Engineering
  • Relevant experience in power electronics, switching strategies, and control algorithms
  • Strong knowledge of power electronics, drives, and control is highly preferred. Experience with hardware testing and real-time simulation will be advantageous.
  • Knowledge and experience in Charging systems, Wireless Charging, Thermal/colling management, Battery Management Systems is preferred.
  • Knowledge of software such as PSIM, PLECS and MATLAB/Simulink
  • Prior knowledge and experience in digital twins, OPAL-RT/HIL will be a bonus
  • Prior knowledge and experience of AI/ML and automation in power electronics and power system will be useful
  • Experienced and committed to participating in project meetings.
  • Self-motivated team player and good project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Open to Fixed Term Contract.
