About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow to contribute to a transformative new initiative within the Urban First Nations Research program, part of Professor James Ward’s ARC Laureate project. This transdisciplinary program privileges Indigenous methodologies and spans four interconnected work packages: truth-telling and identity, economic participation, environmental and urban sustainability, and data systems and infrastructure.

Your work will help strengthen the social and wellbeing outcomes of urban First Nations Peoples and contribute to a lasting legacy through the establishment of an Australian First Nations Urban Research Centre and the development of the next generation of First Nations researchers.

Joining a collaborative and high-performing team, you will be part of a community that values excellence, partnership, cultural integrity and creating positive change—reflecting UQ’s commitment to a better world where people can thrive.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and lead an independent and collaborative research program, produce high-quality publications, contribute to competitive funding applications and support the translation of research into meaningful outcomes for communities and partners.
  • Supervise Honours and Higher Degree by Research students, foster researcher development, provide constructive feedback and coaching, and contribute to a supportive, culturally safe environment that enables others to grow and succeed.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, community organisations, government, industry and academic partners to co-design research, share knowledge and build relationships that reflect UQ’s values of respect, collaboration and impact.
  • Model UQ’s values through service, mentorship and active participation in unit activities, contribute to governance and committee work, and help create an inclusive, high-performing environment where people feel supported and able to do their best work.

This is a research focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ’s Criteria for Academic Performance.

About You

  • Completion of a PhD and a background and/or interest in First Nations health and wellbeing (specifically Indigenous knowledges, methods, urbanisation, social and emotional wellbeing, addressing inequity and policy). Applicants with a background in the disciplines of medicine, public health, epidemiology, environmental sciences, psychology, business/economics, statistics or social policy will also be highly regarded.
  • A growing profile in research in one of the above discipline areas.
  • A developing reputation and track record of publications in reputed peer reviewed journals and presenting at conferences.
  • Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.
  • A growing record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.
