Applications are open for the award of 1 (one) Research Fellowship (BI) within the scope of the “PBA-Vertical Algas” project, funded through funding source No. 0505030202, to be carried out at the Department of Chemistry of the NOVA School of Science and Technology, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA FCT), under the following conditions:
1. Scientific area
Chemistry.
2. Admission requirements
Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and, by the date of contracting, be enrolled in the Master's Degree in Bioorganic Chemistry.
3. Preferred qualifications
The following will be considered preferred qualifications: a final average grade in the Bachelor's Degree in Applied Chemistry equal to or higher than 17 out of 20 and an average grade in the first year of the Master's degree equal to or higher than 18 out of 20.
4. Work plan
Synthesis of a set of metabolite analogues with a marine-derived diterpene scaffold and evaluation of their biological activity for potential pharmacological applications.
5. Applicable legislation and regulations
The fellowship is awarded under the Research Fellowship Holder Statute, approved by Law No. 40/2004 of 18 August, in its current wording, and the Research Fellowship Regulations of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, approved by Order No. 9484/2023 of 29 August, published in Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 179, of 14 September 2023.
6. Workplace and scientific supervision
The work will be carried out at Laboratory 205 of the Department of Chemistry, Departmental Building, NOVA FCT, Caparica Campus, under the scientific supervision of Paula Branco and Luísa Ferreira.
7. Duration of the fellowship
The fellowship will have a duration of up to 6 (six) months, with an expected starting date in October 2026, and may be renewed provided that the conditions underlying its award remain fulfilled, funding is available, and the renewal is compatible with the duration and conditions of the funding, up to the maximum limit applicable to the fellowship type and the fellowship holder's enrolment status.
For students enrolled in a Master's degree, the NOVA Regulations allow a Research Fellowship (BI) for a maximum period of 2 years, including renewals, without prejudice to the limits of the project/funding.
8. Monthly maintenance allowance
The monthly maintenance allowance is €1,090.98 (one thousand and ninety euros and ninety-eight cents), in accordance with the table of values applicable to research fellowships. Payment will be made monthly by bank transfer.
The fellowship holder will also be covered by personal accident insurance and, where applicable, will be reimbursed for contributions to the Voluntary Social Security scheme, in accordance with the applicable legal and regulatory provisions.
9. Activity regime
The activities will be carried out under an exclusive dedication regime, in accordance with the Research Fellowship Holder Statute and the Research Fellowship Regulations of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.
10. Selection and evaluation methods
Selection will be based on Curriculum Assessment (CA), on a scale from 0 to 20, according to the following criteria and weightings:
- average grade in the first year of the Master's degree: 70%;
- final average grade of the Bachelor's degree: 30%.
The Curriculum Assessment score will be calculated according to the following formula:
CA = (0.70 × M1) + (0.30 × B)
where M1 corresponds to the average grade in the first year of the Master's degree and B to the final average grade of the Bachelor's degree.
The selection panel may, if deemed necessary, invite the top three candidates in the ranked list to a Selection Interview (I). If an interview is held, the final score (FS), on a scale from 0 to 20, will be calculated according to the following formula:
FS = (0.30 × M1) + (0.20 × B) + (0.50 × I).

13. Application documents
Applications must include the following documents:
- updated Curriculum Vitae;
- Bachelor's degree certificate, indicating the final grade;
- document providing evidence of the grades obtained in the first year of the Master's degree, required for application of the selection method;
- proof of enrolment and registration in the Master's Degree in Bioorganic Chemistry or, at the application stage, a declaration on honour by the applicant regarding such enrolment, with the official supporting document to be submitted by the time the fellowship contract is concluded.
Where academic documents cannot be obtained by the application deadline, they may, in the cases permitted by the Regulations, be replaced by a declaration under the applicant's responsibility containing the corresponding information. The award/conclusion of the fellowship contract will remain subject to the submission of the official supporting documents within the applicable deadlines.
14. Application period and procedure
The call will be open from 18 September 2026 until 23:59:59 (Lisbon time) on 25 September 2026.
