Research Manager
Position Summary
The Research Manager will play a pivotal role within the senior leadership team of the Emergency Medicine Research division. Responsibilities encompass a wide array of duties aimed at coordinating clinical research activities, overseeing Research Coordinators and Research Interns, fostering professional development, interfacing with Principal Investigators, implementing process enhancements, ensuring patient safety, and cultivating positive external relationships with collaborators.
Reporting directly to the Director of Research Administration and working closely with both the PEM and GEM Directors of Research, the Research Manager will be instrumental in driving excellence in clinical research, including leadership of nodal activities within the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN).
Responsibilities
Staffing:
- Evaluate and advocate for new or replacement positions, including screening and selection of candidates.
- Facilitate the onboarding and training for Research Coordinators in collaboration with HR, including medical surveillance and other related processes.
- Conduct annual performance reviews and establish ongoing performance goals for Research Coordinators.
- Coordinate the recruitment, onboarding, and orientation activities of the RI Program.
- Manage the offboarding process for departing staff members.
Supervision and Training
- Provide direct daily supervision and guidance to Research Coordinators and Research Interns to optimize operational efficiency.
- Allocate workloads and protocol assignments effectively.
- Establish and monitor quality control measures to ensure accuracy and integrity of data.
- Collaborate with the Quality Assurance Manager to support PIs and research staff with study start-up, regulatory compliance, and closeout processes.
- Enhance training and development programs based on the ACRP Core Competency Guidelines for Clinical Research Coordinators.
- Lead biannual Research Intern orientations.
- Manage recognition programs.
- Facilitate monthly Research Coordinator scheduling and PTO management to ensure fairness and operational coverage.
Research Activities
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of active research protocols, including eligibility criteria, procedures, timelines, and outcome measures.
- Oversee Research Coordinator activities related to sample collection, processing, and storage.
- Partner with the Quality Assurance Manager to address protocol deviations and adverse events in compliance with IRB and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee patient incentive programs, including ordering, distribution, and reconciliation.
- Develop and maintain dashboards to track study recruitment, enrollment, and overall performance metrics.
PECARN
- Serve as PECARN Nodal Administrator, attending and coordinating participation in all PECARN conferences, Nodal Administrator meetings, Executive Committee meetings, and Steering Committee activities.
- Responsible for overall planning, coordination, and execution of nodal communication and organizational infrastructure. Coordinates communications, meetings, and operational activities within the node and across the network.
- Works closely with PECARN leadership, federal sponsors, collaborating nodes, and participating site to ensure alignment and effective execution of network priorities.
- Promote partnerships with EMS-C treatment communities, professional organizations, and administrative bodies, as appropriate.
- Serve as a member of the PECARN Feasibility and Budget Subcommittee, contributing to protocol review, feasibility assessments, and financial planning.
- Prepare local and national meeting agendas, provide logistical and operational support, and maintain official meeting records and documentation.
- Oversee and manage multiple PECARN research projects, including coordination across sites, monitoring timelines, and assessing site performance.
- Lead development and coordination of study budgets across PECARN sites, including budget justification preparation, financial tracking, and reconciliation.
- Collaborate with investigators and sites on proposal development, including allocation of funds, cost recovery for faculty effort and multi-site financial coordination.
- Maintain comprehensive project documentation and records and support preparation of grant applications, abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts.
- Prepare progress reports and updates as required by funding agencies and PECARN leadership.
- Perform additional PECARN-related and divisional research duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- 4 years of related experience required, preferably in clinical research.
- Strong leadership with a strong track record of managing high-performing teams and resolving conflict.
- Proficiency in project management.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements and ethical standards in clinical research.
- Ability to set priorities and exercise sound judgment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with senior leadership, faculty, and research staff.
- Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Advanced Excel skills, including experience with pivot tables, lookup functions, and data analysis tools.
