Research Pharmacy Technician

Pharmacy technicians participate in many essential roles in our department and health-system, including medication inventory and distribution, assisting in the preparation of compounded sterile products and non-sterile products, maintenance of required records and documentation, and other important duties important for the provision of patient care.
The goal of the Research Pharmacy (RP) in the Department of Pharmacy Services at Michigan Medicine is to ensure that investigational drug studies and other drug related research at the Hospitals and Clinics are conducted in a safe and efficient manner. In doing so, the RP assists investigators in complying with the requirements of the FDA, study sponsors, Michigan State Board of Pharmacy Regulations, The Joint Commission standards and requirements, and hospital and pharmacy policies. Pharmacy Technician Associate:
- Demonstrates proficiency and skill with pharmacy and health system information systems
- Accurately interpret prescriptions and information on medication labels and containers
- Participate in the documentation of patient care activities within the health record
- Accurately, prepare, compound, and label sterile and non-sterile medications for dispensing
- Stock and maintain pharmacy inventory
- Maintains, dispenses, stores all controlled substances and associated records as required
- Prepare and deliver investigational drugs per research protocols
- Assist with use of automated dispensing machines and other technologies as part of the medication use process (e.g., Omnicell, medication carousels, ScriptPro, DoseEdge, etc.)
- Participate in audits and inspections which support regulatory and compliance standards
- Effectively communicate with other pharmacy team members, physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals, health-system employees, patients, families, and visitors
- Respond to internal and external customers demonstrating service excellence
- Transport medications safely and securely
- Resolve routine medication-related issues and ensure medication transactions are processed accurately and appropriately (insurance and cash-handling where applicable)
- Investigate and resolve routine medication history and reconciliation discrepancies
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor or pharmacist to assist with preparation and delivery of patient medications and other patient care needs
Pharmacy Technician Intermediate:
A Pharmacy Technician Intermediate may be required to perform all of the Duties and Responsibilities of a Pharmacy Technician Associate (included below). They will be proficient and able to be largely self-directed in their efforts within the pharmacy. Further, they may be required to perform the following Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collect and or/record metric, quality and/or surveillance data
- Act as trainer for the orientation of new staff, pharmacy trainees, and/or learners
- Make recommendations on inventory and stocking of pharmacy supplies
- Routinely prepare complex, high-risk, and/or hazardous products
- Troubleshoot complex medication-related issues and make suggestions for improvement (insurance/prior authorization, medication history, etc.)
- Identify and participates in additional projects as needed.
Pharmacy Technician Senior:
Pharmacy Technician Senior is expected to be able to perform all of the essential characteristic duties and responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician Intermediate. They will have mastered the ability to work independently in the pharmacy. Further, they may be required to perform the following Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily activities for optimal workflow
- Assists in professional development via feedback, in-service training, and other activities
- Provides learning experiences for team members
- Leads team meetings and/or other work groups
- Leads process improvements and supports implementation of changes
- Owner and coordinator of a senior technician activity: a specific and necessary task(s) occurring on an ongoing basis. The exact task(s) to be specified at time of appointment
The percentage mix of these duties will vary depending on the area and assigned role within the Research Pharmacy team. Pharmacy Technician Associate:
- High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
- Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
- Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability.
Pharmacy Technician Intermediate:
- High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
- One or more years of relevant pharmacy practice or equivalent experience is necessary.
- Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
- Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability
Pharmacy Tech Grad:
- Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Eligible for licensure as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan Pharmacy, or currently licensed as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan (Temporary License or Full License)
- PTCB Pharmacy Technician Certification will be required within six months after employment begins.
- At least one-year technician experience or completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program is highly desirable
- Basic algebra knowledge is highly desirable
