About the Role
This senior academic position provides visionary research leadership to advance health workforce capability in remote and isolated communities, with a strong focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. The Professor will lead culturally safe, community‑driven research in partnership with Elders and local leaders, strengthening collaborations, attracting significant external research income, and establishing an emerging research program on an international scale. The role also guides staff, HDR students, and early‑career researchers, contributing to strategic research planning and capacity building across the College of Medicine and Public Health.
- Lead a distinguished program of culturally safe, community‑initiated research to improve health service capability and develop a resilient workforce in the Torres Strait and other isolated communities.
- Build strong partnerships with Elders, community leaders, government and external organisations, strengthening local, national and international research collaborations.
- Drive strategic research planning, secure substantial competitive research funding, and elevate the program’s international research profile.
- Provide high‑level leadership, mentoring and supervision to HDR students and early‑ and mid‑career researchers, fostering excellence across the College’s research community.
This position makes a significant contribution to the University’s ambition to change 10 million lives by 2035 by aligning with the strategic driver of delivering research that matters and generating culturally safe, community‑driven research that addresses real‑world health challenges.

You are a distinguished research leader with a strong record of culturally safe, community‑driven research that advances Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. With deep experience working in partnership with communities, you bring an exceptional research profile, proven capability in mentoring emerging scholars, and a commitment to ethical, impactful research that strengthens local, national and international collaborations. You demonstrate high‑level leadership, teamwork and a clear dedication to empowering communities and shaping meaningful health outcomes in isolated settings.
- You hold a PhD in a relevant health‑related discipline and possess a distinguished track record of high‑impact, innovative research aligned with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health priorities.
- You are experienced in culturally safe, community‑initiated research, demonstrating strong adherence to cultural protocols, Indigenous data sovereignty and genuine partnership with communities.
- You bring strong leadership capability, with proven success mentoring HDR students and early‑career researchers and contributing effectively to research program leadership.
- You excel at building collaborative national and international research partnerships and have a strong record of securing competitive external research funding.
