Department of Landscape, Environment and Planning Research Scholarship for Bachelor Degree Holders - 2 VACANCIES

A call is open for the award of two Research Scholarships (Bachelor Degree Holders) within the scope of the project Eradication of two early stage invasive turtle species from the Lagoa Pequena ZPE (8237), financed by international funds through the EU Invasive Species - Fast Response Fund programme, funded by IUCN, under the following conditions:
Scientific area: Environmental Sciences and Ecology
Admission requirements:
- Portuguese as a native language.
- Valid category B driving licence (light vehicles) and own vehicle.
- Bachelor degree in Ecology and Environment, Biology or Environmental Sciences;
- Experience in sampling native and invasive freshwater turtles, particularly using traps;
- Experience in report writing, data analysis and dissemination of results;
- Experience in environmental education activities, particularly with children and young people.
- Ability to independently collect and handle samples for biomonitoring during fieldwork;
- Proficiency in advanced tools for ecological data analysis and processing;
- Submission of a complete curriculum vitae, motivation letter, academic/training certificates and one letter of recommendation;
The following were defined as preferred factors:
- Previous experience in freshwater turtle sampling;
- Availability to carry out fieldwork with flexible working hours;
- Team spirit and ability to work collaboratively.
In accordance with FCT Research Scholarship Regulation No. 950/2019 of 16 December 2019, Articles 3 and 6, candidates for BI (Research Scholarships) must, as a condition for the award of the scholarship, be effectively enrolled in study cycles leading to an academic degree or in non-degree courses. Non-degree courses correspond to those provided for in Article 4(3)(e) of Decree-Law No. 74/2006 of 24 March and must be developed at a higher education institution in association with at least one R&D unit, with the course plan falling within one or more of the unit's research areas.
Work plan:
The aim of this work is to capture and eradicate invasive freshwater turtle populations and monitor native freshwater turtle populations in the Lagoa Pequena ZPE, Sesimbra. It also aims to carry out environmental education sessions to reduce intentional introductions of these turtles into the wild.
The following activities will be carried out:
- Preparation of the traps to be used in capture activities, including checking equipment, assembly, identification, baiting, defining deployment locations and planning capture effort.
- Deployment of traps at the previously defined locations.
- Capture and removal of invasive non-native freshwater turtles using methods appropriate to the site, such as traps, nets or manual capture.
- Recording captured individuals, including species, sex, age class, biometric measurements and capture location. Native species will be released at the capture site.
- Processing of samples and organisation of data collected in the field and laboratory at the University of Évora.
- Awareness-raising activities aimed at the local community, highlighting the impacts of invasive non-native freshwater turtles, the importance of not releasing animals into the wild and the need to report new observations.
- Data processing and analysis, assessing abundance, population structure, effectiveness of capture effort and the need for future actions.
- Preparation of a technical report including methodologies, results, evaluation of the intervention and recommendations for monitoring or continuation of control actions.
Applicable legislation and regulations: The Research Scholarship will be awarded through a contract between the University of Évora and the scholarship holder, according to the draft in Annex I, under the Research Scholarship Statute (Law No. 40/2004 of 18 August, as amended), and considering the provisions of other applicable legislation and regulations, namely the Research Scholarship Regulations of the University of Évora (published by Order No. 8131/2024, of 22 July 2024), https://files.diariodarepublica.pt/2s/2024/07/140000000/0035300366.pdf, and the Research Scholarship Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. (Regulation No. 950/2019, of 16 December, as amended).
Place of work: The work will be carried out at the Department of Landscape, Environment and Planning of the University of Évora, under the general coordination of the Administrator of the University of Évora and the scientific supervision of Professor Pedro Anastácio, who shall prepare an opinion on the final activity report of the scholarship (Annex II), according to the draft in Annex III.
Duration of the scholarship(s): The scholarship will have a duration of 3 months, with an expected start in October 2026. The scholarship contract may be renewed until the end of the funding project budget allocation, always taking into account the maximum duration established for each type of scholarship under Article 14 of the Research Scholarship Regulations of the University of Évora currently in force.
Amount of monthly maintenance allowance: The scholarship amount is €1,090.98, according to the table of values for scholarships awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM-2026.pdf), with payments made monthly by cheque or bank transfer.
Selection methods: The selection methods will consist of curriculum evaluation and assessment of knowledge in aquatic ecology, with emphasis on freshwater turtle species present in Portugal. Evaluation will be based on a scoring system from 5 to 1 points (5 – Excellent suitability; 4 – High suitability; 3 – Satisfactory suitability; 2 – Partial suitability; 1 – Limited suitability), assigned to each of the following criteria:
- Academic training in the field.
- Grade obtained in the relevant academic degree.
- Knowledge of aquatic ecology, with emphasis on the identification, monitoring, capture and management of freshwater turtles, including native and invasive non-native freshwater fauna, as well as experience in the collection and processing of ecological data.
- Curriculum elements and previous experience in the field.

Advertising/notification of results: The final evaluation results will be publicised through a list ranked by final score, posted in a visible and public place at the Department of Landscape, Environment and Planning, and the successful candidate(s) will be notified by email.
For the purposes of the right to a prior hearing of interested parties, the provisional Final Classification will be communicated by any written means to all interested parties.
After communication of the provisional list of evaluation results, candidates will have 10 working days to submit comments, should they wish to do so, under the prior hearing procedure. Based on the final ranking list, a selection reserve list will be established for possible recruitment of new scholarship holders under this project, up to the duration limit of the scholarship. This list may be used if the candidate ranked first withdraws, fails to provide the mandatory documentation, or if a scholarship holder terminates the scholarship early. If none of the candidates demonstrates the profile required to carry out the work plan, the jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship.
Application deadline and submission of applications: The call is open from 15 to 29 september 2026, and the selection results will be published by 30 September 2026.
Applications must be formalised by submitting an application letter accompanied by the following documents: Curriculum Vitae, certificate of qualifications, motivation letter including a declaration of compliance with all admission criteria indicated in the call, and any other supporting documents considered relevant. For application purposes, supporting documents may be replaced by a declaration on honour by the candidate; however, failure at the contracting stage to demonstrate possession of the required degree by the application deadline, or failure to present proof of enrolment or registration in a study cycle or non-degree course, where this is a requirement of the scholarship, will result in cancellation of the candidate's evaluation.
Academic degrees obtained abroad must be recognised/registered by a Portuguese institution in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of 16 August and Ordinance No. 33/2019 of 25 January. Presentation of the certificate is mandatory for signing the scholarship contract.
