The Research Science Associate I performs entry-level professional engineering and scientific research assignments related to a particular field of work. This role acquires basic skills to perform routine tasks. For this role, work is prescribed and completed with little to moderate autonomy. This position works with either close supervision or under clearly defined procedures. This role is entry level to a research support career progression. 

The Research Science Associate II performs professional-level engineering and scientific research assignments.  This position leads, conducts, or assists with the dissemination of knowledge through scholarship, scientific inquiry, and creative expression.  The RSA II requires full proficiency, gained through job-related training and considerable on-the-job experience, to perform a range of tasks, and it takes a broad perspective to solve problems and spot new, less obvious solutions.  This role identifies key issues and patterns from partial/conflicting data. 1. Performs professional research and engineering assignments to include performing experiments; gathering and analyzing data and samples; setting up/operating equipment; and inspects minor fabrication, erection or assembly for conformance to specifications. 
2. Assist with lab inventory upkeep, orders, and compliance procedures. 
3. Performs specified phases of research projects to include making and recording observations and measurements; compiles data; processes paperwork; maintains lab accounts; writes technical reports. 
4. Trains incoming and existing students on experimental procedures and edits students' papers prior to submission for journals or for class.

Research Science Associate II

1. Selects, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates students or new lab members on experimental procedures. 
2. Set-ups, cleans, resets, and restocks equipment and supplies needed for lab periods; maintain inventory of equipment. Assists with lab compliance procedures.
3. Provides guidelines for all lab members; supervises personnel during projects; maintains accurate records of research; and develops, updates, and improves lab manuals. 
4. Selects and determines procedures in design, research, surveys, and investigations; records observations and measurements; and compiles data. 
5. Inspects minor fabrication, erection, or assembly for conformance to specifications.  Conducts specified phases of research projects. 
6. Performs other duties as assigned. 

Required Qualifications

Research Science Associate I and II

• High School Diploma, Vocational Training, or Apprenticeship in a related field.
• One to three years of related experience
  • Additional education may substitute for experience on a one year for one year basis.
• This position may require the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure per Texas EO-GA-48.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a laboratory setting
• Experience handling and training rodents
• Experience with electrophysiology
• General wet-lab skills
• Fine motor skills, dexterity, and attention to detail are critical for this position
