Research Scientist Assistant I, The Center for Archaeological Research (CAR)
Job Summary
The Research Science Assistant I is responsible for assignments that require the technical knowledge to modify or adapt routine procedures under the direction of a supervisor to meet special research requirements. This role assists with assignments that require a basic working knowledge of engineering or scientific methods, such as research, design, or experimental testing.
This is a grant-funded position dependent on availability of funds and/or departmental need.
Core Responsibilities
- Collects and compiles data, computes quantities, extends estimates, and makes and records observations/measurements; conducts standard archaeological fieldwork, monitoring, shovel testing, survey, and test excavations, and records observations/measurements.
- Maintains daily logs of observations, photographs, and notes.
- Sets up and operates equipment as directed by the supervisor and assists in the design of equipment.
- Conducts basic lab tasks such as washing, counting, and cataloging artifacts, and assists in maintaining and cleaning field laboratory equipment.
- Inventories supplies and equipment.
- Writes simple computer programs and prepares technical reports.
- Takes a proactive approach to assist coworkers in various tasks to ensure safety and proactively makes recommendations to improve safety.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma, Vocational Training, or Apprenticeship in a related field.
- One (1) year of related work experience.
- This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, history, or a closely related field.
