Research Scientist Assistant I, The Center for Archaeological Research (CAR)

Job Summary

The Research Science Assistant I is responsible for assignments that require the technical knowledge to modify or adapt routine procedures under the direction of a supervisor to meet special research requirements. This role assists with assignments that require a basic working knowledge of engineering or scientific methods, such as research, design, or experimental testing.

This is a grant-funded position dependent on availability of funds and/or departmental need.

Core Responsibilities

1. Collects and compiles data, computes quantities, extends estimates, and makes and records observations/measurements; conducts standard archaeological fieldwork, monitoring, shovel testing, survey, and test excavations, and records observations/measurements.
2. Maintains daily logs of observations, photographs, and notes.
3. Sets up and operates equipment as directed by the supervisor and assists in the design of equipment.
4. Conducts basic lab tasks such as washing, counting, and cataloging artifacts, and assists in maintaining and cleaning field laboratory equipment.
5. Inventories supplies and equipment.
6. Writes simple computer programs and prepares technical reports.
7. Takes a proactive approach to assist coworkers in various tasks to ensure safety and proactively makes recommendations to improve safety.
8. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma, Vocational Training, or Apprenticeship in a related field.
• One (1) year of related work experience.
• This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, history, or a closely related field.
