Who are we?
The Ifremer "Biodiversity Environment" unit conducts research work to understand, preserve, and sustainably enhance marine ecosystems and fisheries resources, in a context of increasing anthropogenic pressures (pollution, climate change, overfishing) and strong socio-economic needs (food security, cultural identity, blue economy). Its actions are part of Ifremer's priority theme on "Combining a healthy and nourishing ocean," in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 14) and national and European public policies (WFD, CFP, SNML).
Under the responsibility of the head of the BIODIVENV unit, you will lead research work aimed at understanding the relationships between environmental and anthropogenic pressures (chemical pollution, climate change, toxic algal blooms, fishing effort, tourism, etc.), essential marine habitats (coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves), and fisheries resources and biodiversity.
What will your mission BE?
Your missions will enhance integrative, innovative and multidisciplinary approaches to:
- Map anthropogenic pressures and functional zones of biodiversity exploited by fishing.
- Characterize the structure and functioning of biological communities and habitats supporting fishing activities.
- Characterize the links between life history traits of exploited biodiversity, habitat quality, fishing effort, and practices.
- Consider the restoration of fisheries resources and the quality of their habitats.
- Deploy in-situ observation of exploited biodiversity by combining video, eDNA/eRNA, underwater acoustics, in coherence with fisheries monitoring and environmental quality surveillance networks.
What will your activities BE?
- Defining and implementing research actions on environmental pressures on essential marine habitats and fisheries resources in close collaboration with other researchers in the unit working on environmental quality;
- Enhancing work through scientific publications and outreach activities;
- Developing scientific and technical partnerships with partner organizations, locally, regionally, or with units in mainland France;
- Setting up and funding collaborative research projects;
- Participating in research training (supervision of students, PhD, and post-doc);
- Producing opinions and expertise for government services.
- Local correspondent for fisheries issues.
Who will you be working with?
- Internally: Within the BiodivEnv unit, units of the RBE departments (Hisseo, Amure, Halgo, Ccem, Marbec, DOI, Biodivhal, etc.) and ODE (Dyneco, etc.), GTOM, RBE department management, Mediterranean Center management, HR, DAJF.
- Externally: Local authorities, regional state bodies, OFB (French Biodiversity Agency), IRD (Research Institute for Development), University of the Antilles, PNMM (Martinique Marine Natural Park), CRPMEM Martinique (Regional Committee for Maritime Fisheries and Marine Farming of Martinique), ORGP (Regional Organization for Fisheries Management in the Western Pacific), ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea), etc.
How are your activities organised?
- Assignment under local status or fixed-term assignment overseas for 24 months, renewable twice.
- Sea trips and fieldwork required.
Le profil recherché
Who are you?
- University PhD
- Post-doctoral experience
You have the following skills, knowledge and experience:
- Research experience in one (or more) of the following fields: functional ecology, ecophysiology, fisheries science, statistics, cartography, modeling, adaptation to global changes, ecological restoration.
- Experience in conducting and implementing experiments.
- Ability to enhance results and seek funding.
- Mastery of data analysis tools and methods (statistics, modeling, etc.).
- Professional experience (postdoctoral) within recognized universities and/or research institutes in the field is an asset for the position.
- French and English required.
You have the following qualities:
- Aptitude for supervision and teamwork.
- Writing and communication skills in French and English.
- Very good ability to work in a team and collaborate with academic, institutional partners, and public policy makers.
- Interest in fieldwork and data analysis.
- Scientific rigor.
