The Centre for Social Studies (CES) – Associate Laboratory - University of Coimbra (Portugal), opens a call for applications for 1 research studentship (CES/25/2026-BI-EDU-AM) in the project “Revolutionary pedagogies? History of the education projects in Angola and Mozambique (1960s-1980s) [Pedagogias Revolucionárias? História dos projetos de educação em Angola e Moçambique (1960-1980)]”, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, and coordinated at CES by Marisa Ramos Gonçalves (and Maria Paula Meneses).
CES provides a stimulating intellectual environment in social sciences and humanities. The project is part of Thematic Line 3 "Europe and the Global South: Heritages and Dialogues”, which includes researchers interested in analysing the articulations between Europe and the Global South (https://ces.uc.pt/en/ces/linhas).
a. Project Description:
The key objective of the project EDU-AM - Revolutionary pedagogies: history of educational projects in Angola and Mozambique (1960-1980) is the study of revolutionary pedagogical experiences in Southern Africa, focusing on the origins, conflicts and impacts associated with initiatives to implement considerable projects of public education and a revolutionary education for citizenship. The research combines the study of archival sources, written documentation (biographies) and oral history (interviews with key actors who participated in these historical processes).
One of the project's tasks involves producing a documentary, which follows the memories of former students and teachers from Angola and Mozambique connected to educational projects in Cuba, through interviews and personal archives. The project aims at creating a collection of oral history interviews resulting from the research, which will be kept at Centro de Documentação 25 de Abril – Universidade de Coimbra, a partner institution, and, whenever possible, at national archives in Angola and Mozambique.

c. Work plan, tasks:
The selected researcher is expected to have the following responsibilities:
- Organize, transcribe and code the project interviews (audio, video), that will form part of an oral history collection to be integrated in the Centro de Documentação 25 de Abril (Universidade de Coimbra) archive and archives in Angola and Mozambique;
- Support the PI and the team in events organized by the project, and other required dissemination, communication and networking activities planned for EDU-AM, in particular the final conference of the project;
- Support the PI with project management and coordination tasks, including the elaboration of progress reports.
All of the above tasks require proficiency in written and spoken Portuguese and English.

e. Workplace:
The tasks will be performed at the Centre for Social Studies facilities in Coimbra or in other locations when necessary for the good implementation of the work plan under the scientific supervision of the Project's Principal Investigator, Marisa Ramos Gonçalves.
f. Duration of the fellowship contract:
The fellowship will last 4 months, starting on November 1, 2026; ending with the project end date, on February 28 2027.

b) detailed Curriculum Vitae in English, highlighting the items most relevant to the topic and work plan of the call;
c) copies of degree certificates; (note: candidates must meet the eligibility conditions and conditions indicated in point k.)
d) Proficiency in the Portuguese language, unless the candidate is a native speaker of Portuguese.
e) copy of the enrolment for the PhD in the academic year 2026/2027 or copy of the enrolment in a non-academic degree, but integrated into the pedagogical project of a higher education institution (note: candidates must meet the eligibility conditions) and conditions indicated in point k.).

Skills/Qualifications
i. Preferred selection criteria and their weighing:
1. Motivation Letter (20%);
2. Experience in oral history research projects: transcription, organisation and metadata creation; Master’s degree on History or related disciplines preferred (30%);
3. Previous experience in the research topics of the project [postcolonial transitions; education and citizenship; South African countries’ history of the struggle for independence and of the process of independent state building] (20%);
4. Demonstrated experience in the co-organisation and support of research communication as well as dissemination activities (30%).

j. Monthly Allowance
The monthly stipend is 1.359,64 euros according to the Regulations for Fellowships of the FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology, and of the Centre for Social Studies. Eligibility criteria
k. Mandatory requirements
1. Be a doctoral student or
1.1 have a bachelor's or master's degree and be enrolled in a course that does not confer an academic degree but is part of the educational project of a higher education institution (see associated conditions in a);
2. Academic degree in the area of Social Sciences and / or Humanities (see associated conditions in b);
a) Applicants must provide proof of enrolment in a doctoral or non-academic degree course, in the current academic year. If, at the time of application, the applicant does not have a valid document proving their enrolment, they must send a declaration of honour in which they state to undertake the enrolment within a maximum period of 30 days after the communication of the results, under the penalty of not contracting the scholarship.
b) Applicants with an academic degree and diploma issued by a foreign Higher Education Institution must present proof of recognition of the academic degree by the Portuguese Higher Education System, (law DL66/2018). Any candidate without the recognition of the degree(s) will be admitted to the competition, but during the evaluation process, the selection panel cannot:
i) recognise the candidate's grades and assess according to the possession of such grades;
ii) give equivalence to, or validate, the grade of her/his degree;
iii) use that note or its conversion as an evaluation parameter.
In case of selection, the fellowship contract can only be signed after recognising the academic degree by the Portuguese authorities, under the terms of the Law-decree n66/2018, August 16. The selected candidate must deliver the recognition of the degree within 30 days after the communication of the results. After the 30 days, the jury may decide to 1. either extend the deadline for the candidate to prove the recognition; 2. assign the fellowship to the second place; 3. or not award the fellowship.

l. Selection process
Applicants will be selected based on their curricular evaluation. In case of equivalent curricular evaluations, the jury may decide to short-list the best-positioned applicants for an interview, meant to assess the applicant's potential in integrating the project's scientific dynamic and his/her interest in the project's thematic areas and activities. If applied, each of the two methods of selection will have a rating of 50% in the final classification.
